Everything we know about Greedfall 2: The Dying World
Spiders is back for more.
The first Greedfall was a huge surprise, throwing players into a BioWare-style RPG that takes place on a series of islands invaded by colonial forces. Developer Spiders has been filling a kind of “B-game” niche for years, but Greedfall marked the most ambitious game the studio had developed yet. Generally, Spiders moves onto something new after each release, but Greedfall 2: The Dying World marks the first major sequel from the studio. Although details are still a bit sparse, here’s everything we know about Greedfall 2.
When will Greedfall 2 be released?
Even though Spiders has officially revealed Greedfall 2, we won’t be getting our hands on it for quite a while. No official release date has been set, but the game has been given a loose release window of simply “2024.” This means Greedfall 2 is still in the early days of production.
This makes perfect sense as Spiders also has another game in development, the Steampunk-inspired Steelrising, which also doesn’t have a release date. Steelrising was announced in July 2021, so we should expect that game to get a marketing cycle before Spiders divulges more information on Greedfall 2.
What are the Greedfall 2 platforms?
We don’t actually know exactly what platforms Greedfall 2 will be on, as the announcement says the game is coming to “PC and consoles.” Considering the game isn’t slated to release until 2024, it’s unlikely it will release on PS4 and Xbox One, and will only be on current-gen systems like PS5 and Xbox Series X. The first Greedfall was multiplatform at launch, and while a console exclusive is possible, it seems unlikely.
Is there a Greedfall 2 trailer?
At the moment there’s only one reveal trailer for Greedfall 2, which seems to be using in-game footage. The trailer focuses heavily on the native people of Teer Fradee, showing a standoff between them and a group of soldiers. The screen cuts to black and a gunshot sounds, then we move onto a new scene where the natives are imprisoned aboard a ship as it travels toward a massive city. The trailer provides some hints as to the overall tone and focus of the story, as it’ll likely involve freeing your captured people.
What is Greedfall 2’s story?
According to the announcement page on Spiders’ website, Greedfall 2 is a prequel that takes place three years before the original game. It’s basically the complete opposite of the original. The first Greedfall cast you as a character named De Sardet, a noble of the Merchant Congregation, and ostensibly a part of the colonization effort. Greedfall 2, on the other hand, puts you in the shoes of the colonized, a native of the island of Teer Fradee. Here’s the official description from Spiders,
“In this old world torn apart by war, scarred by malichor and the political conspiracies of different factions, you must regain your freedom and take back the reins of your destiny. Using diplomacy, cunning, or combat, as well as the help of the allies you gather, it is up to you to put an end to the ambitions of conquest of a man who could bring both the continent and your island to their end.”
Greedfall put a big emphasis on choice and dealing with various political factions, so it’s likely Greedfall 2 will go even further in that direction. The sequel will also put a heavy emphasis on companions, with Director Jehanne Rousseau telling IGN “We really focused on them this time, even more than in the previous game.”
What is Greedfall 2’s gameplay like?
Gameplay is what we know the least about in regards to Greedfall 2, although it will, of course, be very similar to the first game. There are a few early details we can clean from Rousseau’s interview with IGN, which states the vision for Greedfall 2 “Is to replicate Knights of the Old Republic’s smart approach to real-time-with-pause combat.”
With Greedfall 2, Spiders is trying to make companion AI much smarter and more dynamic, able to handle basic encounters with ease. The new pause system, however, will help tremendously in boss battles, letting players fine-tune their party’s positions and synchronize attacks. Outside of combat changes, Spiders hasn’t detailed any other major gameplay changes with Greedfall 2.
