Rey's Lightsaber in 'Star Wars Battlefront II' Might Be a Spoiler
If new footage of Star Wars Battlefront II is any indication, then Rey might trade Luke’s blue lightsaber for an entirely different one at some point in The Last Jedi. In fact, she might even build one herself if Jedi traditions are upheld.
In a menu screen for the upcoming Star Wars warfare simulator game, Rey has the The Last Jedi attire she wore to Ahch-To and a blue lightsaber that looks nothing like the one she presented to Luke in the final moments of The Force Awakens. Could this be a huge spoiler about Rey’s training in the upcoming film?
Traditionally, each Jedi has to find a kyber crystal to use as a power source in the construction of their own lightsaber. It’s something of a rite of passage. Especially if Luke trains Rey to be the titular “last Jedi,” then that would explain why her hilt looks so radically different — it could be an entirely new creation of hers during the film.
Rey already has a lightsaber. The folks at Lucasfilm confirmed that the blue lightsaber she wields in The Force Awakens and early Last Jedi press photos is “Rey’s lightsaber,” even though it was originally Anakin’s (and then Luke’s). The filmmakers say it’s her’s now, full stop. But… that doesn’t mean she can’t get a new one. The video game seems to hint she will.
You can see the design in this captured screen:
Though hilt shape varies wildly and some villains opt for dynamic alterations — like Darth Maul’s famous double-sided saber or Kylo Ren’s cross-hilt saber — most Jedi wield a blue-bladed saber, so even a new Jedi weapon built by Rey might look very familiar.
Compare Rey’s Lightsaber in Battlefront II to the traditional Skywalker saber she’s shown wielding in The Last Jedi, and it becomes clear that they are obviously different weapons.
Some early reports suggest that Rey will use the Skywalker lightsaber for at least some of The Last Jedi. But other sources confirm that footage does show Luke taking back his lightsaber.
These contradictory reports could be reconciled if Luke takes back the Skywalker saber for good and Rey somehow gets a new one. But perhaps the most exciting theories point towards the hotly debated theories about Rey’s parentage.
The thing is, the schematic of “Rey’s Lightsaber” in Battlefront II is an exact match to the model of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s third and final lightsaber and also Luke’s green lightsaber — the two shared a similar hilt mainly because the prop was repurposed.
If anything, Rey’s Battlefront II lightsaber appears to be a 1:1 match for Obi-Wan’s, which might fuel a lot of fan theories about the identity of Rey’s real parents. Her being a Kenobi in some way would explain the design choice. Or if Luke somehow recovered Obi-Wan’s lightsaber at some point, maybe he will give it to Rey in The Last Jedi in much the same way that Obi-Wan once gave Anakin’s saber to Luke?
It’s worth noting that the game itself is still in development, and the footage comes from an unfinished version, so things could change before release, including lightsaber designs. It could, of course, just be an oversight.
Either way, we might find out more when Star Wars Battlefront II is released on November 17, 2017, and we’ll definitely know when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15, 2017
