After joining the alien Prophets in the Celestial Temple, Captain Benjamin Sisko said he would “be back,” and now there might finally be a hint as to what he meant by that. Former Star Trek: Deep Space Nine showrunner Ira Steven Behr is creating a new documentary about the show in which he and other writers explored the possibilities of new DS9 episodes, which would continue the story of Sisko and the rest of the crew.
“Everyone had to watch the final episode of season seven, so everyone remembered where everyone was on the playing field,” Behr told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. By “everyone,” he meant his former Deep Space Nine writing cohorts Ronald D. Moore, Rene Echevarria and Hans Beimler, who along with Behr, all got together to write a brand-new hypothetical episode for Deep Space Nine for the purposes of a new documentary. Behr said the idea came from actor Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko), who said the documentary shouldn’t just be “talking heads.” So, the concept of Behr getting his team together to do a “new” episode will be featured in the documentary, tentatively titled “What We Left Behind.”
The only catch is Behr’s documentary isn’t done yet, and he’s hoping to get the whole thing funded on Indiegogo. But there’s good reason to believe the movie will happen. What We Left Behind is directed by Adam Nimoy, son of Leonard Nimoy, and director of the 2016 documentary For the Love of Spock. Adam Nimoy also previously directed episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Fans who have read the no-holds-barred non-fiction book The Fifty-Year Mission are probably aware of some of the behind-the-scenes turmoil on Deep Space Nine, but that doesn’t mean the chaos is common knowledge. “There was some really heavy-duty stuff that I’m not sure we can even show,” Behr told TrekMovie, hinting at some of the more tempestuous Deep Space Nine stories never recited on camera.

Right now, there is no scheduled release date for What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But, when it does emerge, hopefully fans will get some solid answers to when and if Captain Sisko really came back to that rickety old space station at the edge of the final frontier.
