The United Launch Alliance launched its 100th mission Friday, an Atlas V rocket bearing a Morelos-3 satellite for Mexico’s communications network.

ULA was started in 2006 as a partnership between Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company to become one of the first successful private launch firms, and the milestone launch for Mexico’s Ministry of Communications and Transportation is one more assurance that independent contractors will be as much a part of future space programs as government entities are. And Elon Musk should have somebody trying to compete with Space X.

Speaking of, here’s a preview vid from ULA for the “reliable, accessible, and affordable” launch system it says it’s working on for Americans.
