New 'Crimson Peak' Clip Is Full of Sass And Hints of 'The Shining'
All work and no play makes Guillermo a dull boy.
Guillermo del Toro’s new film Crimson Peak looks like a nightmarish dark delight in the same vein as his earlier Pan’s Labyrinth. Starring Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, and Charlie Hunnam, it is a Victorian gothic centered upon a dysfunctional family in a haunted mansion. Stephen King has already called it “gorgeous and fucking terrifying.” A newly released clip confirms that the Victorian sass levels will be high.
This passive aggressive faceoff confirms that although women are typically timid and preyed upon in traditional gothic narratives, del Toro’s story will have more gumption. Chastain’s character, the probable villain, shows some intriguing steely-eyed edge.
Hiddelston’s character, not to be ignored, reveals hints of another cabin fever film — The Shining — when he says something along the lines of, “Oh, by the way, don’t mind the red water, it’s just the pipes, definitely nothing creepy!”
Crimson Peak, due in theaters October 16th, just keeps looking more promising.
