'Rise of Skywalker' spoilers: 'Battlefront 2' trailer shows new Reylo fight
Is there another early Kylo Ren versus Rey dual we haven't seen previews for yet?
by Corey PlanteStar Wars: Battlefront II is getting a big The Rise of Skywalker-themed update, and a new trailer for the game could have some movie spoilers in it. The trailer heavily features an early confrontation between Rey and Kylo Ren in Episode IX.
Is it possible that these two come face-to-face within the movie’s first act? Or is this trailer just a fun mashup of characters in places that exist in the movie? Either way, we get an extensive new look at a new jungle planet prominently featured in The Rise of Skywalker trailers and clips so far.
EA released the new trailer early Monday morning for the “Celebration” edition of Battlefront II, which launches Tuesday, expanding the game with new characters and this new planet as a playable destination.
In the trailer, we see First Order forces arrive at the jungle planet to begin a ground invasion. Finn leads a group of Resistance fighters on the ground, but once the flying stormtroopers swoop in, they’re forced to retreat. Underneath a large Resistance ship, Kylo Ren uses the Force to attack Resistance fighters, flanked by some Sith Troopers. That’s when Rey shows up and deftly takes several of them down with her repaired lightsaber.
It’s a totally epic and surprising moment, but is it going to happen in the movie?
The official description for this planet in Battlefront II implies that some kind of battle happens there:
Immerse yourself in the finale of the Skywalker saga in Star Wars: Battlefront II. Inspired by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, set foot on an exotic new jungle planet where a fateful war between the Resistance and First Order thunders.
“Inspired by” could indicate that this merely puts a nonexistent battle on a planet that’s featured in the film. An EA blog post from earlier in December confirms that a new jungle planet is featured in Episode IX. With this recent update, this planet is available in co-op mode where “you’ll be playing as either the Resistance or First Order as the conflict spreads to this tropical paradise.”
Assuming the movie does open on the scene of Kylo Ren meeting Palpatine, it’s possible that he gains access to the Sith fleet almost immediately and then dons his repaired helmet to attack the Resistance. This jungle planet also appears to be where Rey trains and receives a lightsaber from Leia.
Later, Rey plans some kind of heist that Finn, Poe, Chewie, and the droids tag along for, inevitably leading to another confrontation against Kylo Ren where they smash Darth Vader’s helmet.
Does all of this information set the stage for an early battle between the Resistance and the First Order on this planet? Possibly. What else do we know about this new location?
An October leak of a Star Wars-themed Monopoly game teased that this planet is called Ajan Kloss. By now, even the Star Wars wiki Wookiepedia lists Ajan Kloss as the setting for the new primary Resistance base.
Ultimately, the original Battlefront II launch trailer did feature a fight between Yoda and Darth Maul (which never happened in the history of Star Wars), so there’s every chance that whatever happens in trailers like this doesn’t have a huge impact on what happens in the movie.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released in theaters December 20, 2019.
