'Star Wars 9' spoilers: Trailer Easter egg reveals a huge Baby Yoda spoiler
This might be our biggest clue yet that Baby Yoda will appear in 'The Rise of Skywalker.'
by Jake KleinmanWhen Star Wars released the “final” trailer for Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker we assumed it would be, well, the final trailer. Instead, Lucasfilm continues to barrage fans with a series of shorter TV spots, revealing new bits of footage on an almost daily basis. The latest Star Wars trailer includes a few more exciting moments, but it’s the music that could be the most revealing part — and it might just reveal how The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda connect to the final movie in the Skywalker saga.
Speculative spoilers for The Mandalorian and The Rise of Skywalker below.
Watch the latest Rise of Skywalker trailer again and pay attention to the music. Does it sound familiar? If not, you might be due for an Empire Strikes Back rewatch on Disney+ because we’re pretty sure we’re hearing Yoda’s theme from Episode V.
Here it is if you’d like to compare the two for yourself:
Why does that matter? Well, it’s possible Lucasfilm just picked this particular tune because it sounds epic, but considering Yoda’s recent return to pop culture thanks to “Baby Yoda,” that would be a pretty big coincidence.
Pretty much since the moment Baby Yoda first appeared onscreen in The Mandalorian, we’ve been wondering what it could mean for The Rise of Skywalker. After all, the Disney+ show takes place shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi and about 30 years before TROS.
So it makes sense that by the time the Emperor returns in Episode IX, Baby Yoda would presumably be in fighting form and return to take on Palpatine, or at least lend the Resistance a furry green hand.
The fact that we haven’t seen Baby Yoda in Episode VII or VIII does raise some red flags, though. Where has the little guy been hanging out? Is he hiding on Dagobah like the original Yoda? Did he have to go back to his home planet? Does Werner Herzog get his hands on Baby Yoda and steal all his midi-chlorian juice?
We still have no idea what happens to Baby Yoda in The Mandalorian, but if he doesn’t show up in The Rise of Skywalker it could feel like a missed opportunity to bring the internet’s latest obsession to the big screen. And considering this Yoda Easter egg in the latest Episode IX trailer, Lucasfilm may be hinting that’s exactly what happens.
Of course, assuming Baby Yoda does show up in Episode IX, that’s no guarantee it will be enough to beat Emperor Sheev Palpatine. After all, remember what happened to Yoda back in Revenge of the Sith when he tried to take on Palps by himself? Last time, Sheev through the entire Senate at Yoda, so who knows what he’ll do next.
