'Star Wars 9' leak suggests Dark Rey appears during climactic Kylo Ren duel
Did Daisy Ridley drop a major clue about her dark doppelgänger?
When “Dark Rey” made her debut in Disney’s D23 trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the internet was abuzz with what it could mean for Rey’s storyline. Would she be swayed to the Dark Side? Is she a clone of Emperor Palpatine? A newly resurfaced interview with Daisy Ridley suggests she filmed her Dark Rey scenes around the same time as another major scene. But, what does that mean for the storyline of The Rise of Skywalker? Let’s dive in.
Warning! Speculation and discussion of previous leaks ahead for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Rey and Kylo Ren’s Force bond has played an important role in both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Their connection has evolved to include the ability to reach across physical barriers, and fans have speculated that The Rise of Skywalker would push the limits of their bond to include teleporting to the other’s location.
A Making Star Wars leak from April suggested that this bond would allow them to engage in a “Force flash” duel — which would see them traverse multiple locations as they battled. In an interview with AdoroCinema, Daisy Ridley’s comments suggest that Dark Rey might appear during this climactic fight between the two.
“That [double-lightsaber] scene was filmed in England in November [2018]. There were huge water cannons, and it was really, really cold. Everybody literally soaked,” Ridley said.
Sound familiar? Kylo and Rey’s fight from the D23 trailer seems to take place in similar conditions. In fact, Ridley brings up the showdown against Kylo in the same interview. Dark Rey may be a vision both of them are able to see while dueling. It wouldn’t be the first time Rey had a vision, and if her connection with Kylo is growing stronger, it makes sense that he would be able to see them as well. During The Force Awakens, Rey has visions of the Knights of Ren, among other things. The same thing may happen during the “Force flash” fight, only now Rey will unintentionally allow Kylo to experience the visions as well.
The setting and weather patterns certainly suggest that Dark Rey and the battle are connected. Whatever the case may be, the mystery of Dark Rey continues, but this interview may have shed a bit more light surrounding the circumstances we might see her.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20.
