In 'The Dragon Prince' Season 3, Aaravos is more "complicated" than you think
"We've been thinking about this character, planning this character."
The Dragon Prince fans have been obsessed with Aaravos ever since he was introduced in Season 2 — a quick search for “Aaravos fan art” confirms as much — but when the official Season 3 trailer debuted on Saturday, the mysterious Startouch Elf was noticeably absent. But if you’re worried this means Aaravos won’t turn up in Dragon Prince Season 3, you can rest easy — at least based on what series co-creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond told Inverse earlier this year.
"Aaravos is complicated… Is he Lucifer or is he Prometheus? — Aaron Ehasz
This was back in July at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. I’d just attended a Dragon Prince panel where fans packed a crowded conference hall to ask questions about the show’s past and future. Aaravos was a frequent topic. So a few hours later, when I had a chance to speak to Ehasz and Richmond directly, I brought up the elf again, asking if Aaravos’ popularity among fans might influence his role in the show movie forward.
The short answer? No. The long answer? Aaravos has always been a key player in the story of The Dragon Prince.
“You can listen to the music in the first five minutes Viren is examining the mirror and it’s like — we’ve been thinking about this character, planning this character,” Ehasz said. “This character is the one who gives the voiceover in the first minutes of the show. Look at the credits in the end. It doesn’t say, narrator, it says Aaravos.”
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that fans instantly fell in love with Aaravos, but that wasn’t exactly a mistake either.
“His design is awesome,” Richmond said. “Everything about him just landed perfectly.”
As for what sort of role Aaravos will play in The Dragon Prince Season 3 and beyond, well, you’ll have to wait and find out. But, as Ehasz explained, anyone assuming this mysterious elf is a villain may want to think again.
“People may have over assumed the evil of this character when he’s quite complicated,” Ehasz said. “I think that he is intelligent and manipulative. It’s complicated. Aaravos is complicated. I think we’ve said before, ‘Is he Lucifer or is he Prometheus?’ He obviously has a role with humanity that he plays.”
But at the end of the day, there’s only one thing you need to know about what Ehasz has to say about Aaravos:
“We love him.”
The Dragon Prince Season 3 hits Netflix on November 22.
