'Jedi: Fallen Order' launch trailer showcases a fearsome new Inquisitor

Say hello to the Ninth Sister.

Jedi: Fallen Order follows young Jedi Cal Kestis in an era of Star Wars history shortly after the infamous Order 66 wiped out most of the Jedi in the galaxy, and the new launch trailer for the game showcases a fearsome new Inquisitor, one of several Dark side Force-users tasked with hunting down and killing any Jedi left alive.

First glimpsed in the “Cal’s Mission” trailer in September, one hulking alien Inquisitor called the Ninth Sister appears in Tuesday’s launch trailer to fight Cal with her double-sided red Inquisitor lightsaber. Pieces of their fight have been included in a few gameplay demos that made the rounds across the internet over the last month, but this is the most fearsome look we’ve gotten yet of the character and the first time we get a glimpse at the cinematic start to their duel.

As the trailer opens, Cal is on a jungle planet when the Ninth Sister leaps towards him from the darkness. Instantly, both their lightsabers ignite. Towards the end of the trailer, we see her fire up the other half of her lightsaber to attack Cal in a towering, aggressive way that looks more formidable than anything Darth Maul could do.

Say hello to the Ninth Sister.

Who is the Ninth Sister and what are the Inquisitors?

A majorly important group of Dark side Force-users in Star Wars Rebels working for the Emperor and supervised by Darth Vader, the Inquisitors were similar to what the Knights of Ren are now. They pursued the Jedi Kanan Jarrus and his Padawan Ezra Bridger in the years before the Battle of Yavin. Each of them was a Jedi that turned to the Dark side. According to current canon, 12 Inquisitors existed at one point in time, and while two remain mostly unknown, the Second and Ninth Sisters had been featured in comics previously with little known about them. Jedi: Fallen Order will change all that.

As far as anyone knows, all of the Inquisitors are non-human (several of them wear masks), and that holds true with the Ninth Sister, a massive Dowutin formerly known as Masana Tide who also appeared in the Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith comics. As a Jedi, she was an empath who could detect people’s emotions and connect with them in uncanny ways, essentially making her one of the greatest Jedi mind readers. She was trained by the Grand Inquisitor before Vader assumed command of the group and took out her left eye as a lesson in loss. The Ninth Sister also lost a leg at one point. Like many of her brethren (and Vader) she’s technically a cyborg.

Along with the mysterious Second Sister, the Ninth Sister will be a major antagonist to Cal in Jedi: Fallen Order, but whether or not she survives their fight remains to be seen.

Jedi: Fallen Order will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on November 15, 2019.
