Thor: Ragnarok effectively revitalized the Thor series back in 2017. It brought a new take to a MCU property still struggling to find its identity. Under the guiding hand of director Taika Waititi the film became a critical and financial smash. It elevated the status of several actors and behind-the-scenes folks, as well as characters in the Marvel Universe as a whole. Suddenly, Thor was a top-tier Avenger and Valkyrie ended up with a spotlight appearance in the massive Avengers: Endgame. However, there was one undeniable breakout star — and it wasn’t who you think.

The breakout star of Thor:Ragnarok was not Tessa Thompson’s (admittedly rad) Valkyrie. It wasn’t Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster or Taika Waititi as director. No, the breakout star of Thor: Ragnarok was Korg, the sentient rock pile/Kronan alien with a great Kiwi accent and a full rotation of great quips.

Like Valkyrie, Korg (who, by the way, is played by Waititi himself) received something of a spotlight moment in Avengers: Endgame, in a scene in which he’s living with Depressed Thor and living like a fratboy, guzzling beer and playing Fortnite all day. While the film doesn’t tell us where he stands after the events of the film, Korg fans need not fear. We’ll be getting more of him very soon.

In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which he appeared on to promote his upcoming film Jojo Rabbit, the director confirmed Korg’s return in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. The announcement was met with thunderous applause from the audience, which the director thanked them for profusely.

There’s no telling if his sidekick Miek will return as well, but for now Korg’s return is certain. He’ll be joining Thor actor Chris Hemsworth and Thompson’s Valkyrie as a returning cast member, alongside Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, who returns to the MCU to wield the hammer Mjolnir in the film.

Look for Korg’s return in Thor: Love and Thunder on November 5, 2021.
