'Runaways' Season 3 trailer teases a 'Cloak & Dagger' crossover
Even more super-teenagers.
by Corey PlanteIn Season 3 of Marvel’s Runaways, Nico further embraces the darkness to enhance her black magic powers as a witch, and she comes under the tutelage of Morgan le Fay, the mythological figure said to be the older half-sister of King Arthur (yes, of Arthurian legend). Nico does something dark and sinister, and it’s ostensibly what triggers the much-talked-about crossover with Cloak & Dagger, or at least that’s what the latest trailer released Friday during New York Comic Con wants us to think.
Whatever bad stuff happens, it seems like it might be Nico’s fault.
“Stop fighting it Nico,” actress Elizabeth Hurley says as Morgan le Fay in the trailer. “There is no need to be afraid of the dark.” She later confronts Nico’s girlfriend Karolina about her fear of losing Nico to the darkness. “She’s been mine for a long time,” she says. As she says this, we see Nico channel the darkness to summon the Staff of One out of her own chest. Is this the inciting event?
At the end of the trailer, Nico is back at the Runaways’ base, seemingly training with the Staff of One when a huge shroud of darkness appears.
“Who are you?” Tandy from Cloak & Dagger asks. “…and what the hell have you done?” Tyrone finishes. If we had to guess based on all of this context, Morgan le Fay probably has some connection to the Darkforce dimension, the same source of Cloak’s shadowy superpowers. When Nico embraces a similar kind of darkness, it may have opened the world up to new dangerous threats in addition to the Magistrate’s family that’ll continue to threaten them all.
“Nico draws them all into a dark realm where its ruler Morgan le Fay, played by Elizabeth Hurley, is much more nefarious than anyone the kids have yet to face,” the official Season 3 description reads. Does that mean the Cloak & Dagger crossover happens rather early in the season? That remains unclear, but it’s starting to seem like Morgan le Fay might be the biggest threat the kids have to face this season.
The specifics behind all this aren’t immediately clear, but it’s definitely Nico’s fault that Morgan le Fay showed up — along with new allies Cloak and Dagger. We’ll have to wait until the new season drops to find out why.
All 10 episodes of Runaways Season 3 will be released on Hulu December 13, 2019.
