The villain of 'Captain Marvel 2' may have already leaked
If this rumor proves true, she'll need all the help she can get.
Hot on the heels of correctly leaking the cancellation of Hulu’s Ghost Rider, a new post on the Spanish-language Marvel fansite Espacio Marvelita claims to have two big pieces of news regarding the direction of Captain Marvel 2. The sequel to the character’s blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe debut is still in the early stages of development, but given the track record of the source, it may be worth taking these claims a bit more seriously.
The first bombshell Sutton drops is that the villain of the film will be Veranke, the leader of the Skrulls in the comics. After the destruction of the Skrull Throneworld by Galactus, she spearheads the invasion of Earth, capturing several superhumans and infiltrate Earth’s defenses along the way. Veranke notably masqueraded as Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, in the iconic “Secret Invasion” arc penned by Brian Michael Bendis and Lenil Francis Yu. As “Spider-Woman,” Veranke worked alongside Nick Fury as a double agent for S.H.I.E.L.D., and later became a triple agent as a member of the newly-formed New Avengers, led by none other than Captain America.
As Marvel fans the world over are keenly aware, rights to Spider-Woman remain with Sony at present, along with much of the Spider-verse. That means it’s unlikely that we’ll see the story play out exactly in that fashion. Even so, it’s reasonable to assume that if Veranke is around, the long-anticipated Skrull invasion of the MCU is coming, in some form or another.
The other scoop from Espacio Marvelita’s post involves Nova, who apparently guess dead after the Corps’ home planet was annihilated by Thanos. There currently appear to be plans in place to debut Richard Rider, the original Nova, in Captain Marvel 2. The Nova Corps we are introduced to in Guardians of the Galaxy is a massive, wide-spread organization, roughly comparable to the Green Lanterns of the DC universe. With the Corps wiped out by the Mad Titan, it feels safe to say that Richard Rider could be the guy who rebuilds it from the ground up.
There’s still no telling what the sequel will be about or if either of these characters will actually show up in it. But, for now, it feels like a step in the right direction for Captain Marvel 2.
