'Smash Bros. Ultimate' DLC Rumor Hints at Unexpected 'Overwatch' Crossover

Talk about one ambitious crossover

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans have been frantically trying to figure out who the next DLC fighter will be after Banjo-Kazooie join the roster later this year for months now. There has been wide speculation ranging from more anamorphic animals, like Crash Bandicoot, to harbingers of death, like the Doomguy. But a recent 4chan rumor has added a completely unexpected possibility from the Overwatch universe.

D.Va is the spunky, pink-mech-driving tank from Blizzard’s team-based shooter Overwatch, and she could be Smash Bros. Ultimate’s next fighter, according to an anonymous 4chan user. On August 25, the user claimed Nintendo would reveal a “female character” that would “disappoint and confuse” fans on September 12. They then followed up two days later and said she has a “Mecha,” which matches the pronunciation of D.Va’s MEKA.

The second post came a day after: An Overwatch-themed Nintendo Switch case was leaked by gaming accessory manufacturer PowerA. The company posted and quickly removed an Amazon listing for the accessory that said it was “officially licensed by Nintendo and Blizzard Entertainment.”

That’s a huge hint that Blizzard’s shooter might be ported to the Nintendo Switch, just like Diablo III — another Blizzard game — was in 2018. Nintendo and Blizzard already having an established relationship lends credence to the assumption that a Switch version of Overwatch is imminent, and that could very well be grounds for a D.Va being named as Smash Bros. Ultimate’s next DLC fighter.

The Overwatch tank’s moveset could easily be replicated in Smash Bros. Ultimate. Her rocket boosters would serve as her main recovery mechanic, propelling her upwards when she’s off the stage. Her Micro Missiles could be modeled after Snake’s Nikita missiles or Samus’ missiles. Finally, D.Va’s Defense Matrix could work similarly to Ness and Lucas’ PSI Magnet ability that absorbs projectiles.

The anonymous 4chan poster might be on to something, despite the online message board’s sketchy reputation.

It’s worth noting that most Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter leaks and rumors have originated from 4chan. In fact, the last three character announcements, which included Joker, The Hero, and Banjo-Kazooie were all predicted on the forum months before they were officially revealed by Nintendo. Were those lucky guesses or legitimate leaks? It’s tough to know when we’re dealing with a site where users are mostly anonymous.

Either way, this rumor aligns with recent Nintendo-Blizzard news, which is more evidence than many of the previous rumors had. Overwatch could be coming to the Switch — that might involve D.Va making a debut in Smash Bros. Ultimate.

All of the Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighters can be purchased with either the $24.99 Fighter Pass or individually for $5.99 upon their release.
