'Fortnite' Will Flip Upside Down With 'Stranger Things' Season 3 Crossover
Unlike that Godzilla crossover, this one's really happening.
The newest seasons for Stranger Things and Fortnite: Battle Royale both introduced a mall as a key location, but this is much bigger than a mere coincidence. Both locations have an ice cream shop called Scoops Ahoy, and they look exactly the same. This was an early-May soft serve tease for a more significant crossover still to come closer to Stranger Things Season 3’s release that could include a Demogorgon outfit, a new limited-time mode, and we’re praying for those Scoops Ahoy uniforms as well.
In case you think this connection might be some kind of coincidence, look closely at the matching wallpaper and the window with red beams behind the counter. (Robin, Steve, and Dustin are in the back room in the above image.) There’s no doubt that these are the same location.
The Fortnite Scoops Ahoy was added at the start of Season 9 in early May. In the opening cinematic for the then-new season, two Fortnite characters retreated into a bunker and emerged years later to find new locations like Mega Mall. One of the many new businesses in Mega Mall was the nautical-themed ice cream parlor.
At E3 2019 earlier this month, Netflix’s Director of Interactive Games Chris Lee owned up to this tease and confirmed that some kind of crossover was coming to the hit battle royale game. He said fans “may have seen in Fortnite Season 9 that we had a Scoops Ahoy from Stranger Things show up in the mall, so there’s a bit more behind that in a few weeks.”
The original Scoops Ahoy in the Hawkins, Indiana of Stranger Things was first teased in July 2018 in a teaser (featured below). The Starcourt Mall will play a huge role in Season 3. Steve Harrington has a job at the Scoops Ahoy when the season starts, and the season finale is titled “The Battle of Starcourt.”.
Some fan theories assume there’s a secret government facility hidden underneath the mall.
All of these details could culminate in a very interesting ongoing event in Fortnite that resembles the Avengers: Endgame crossover event or the John Wick event. Both events included themed outfits and limited-time game modes.
Twitter user @Lucas7yoshi, a data-miner who often leaks Fortnite information ahead of time, has discovered some Fortnite code indicating that a Stranger Things set of cosmetic items was coming to the game that will include a Demogorgon skin.
If the Stranger Things and Fortnite crossover does include a limited-time mode, then it could be a huge spoiler for the third Stranger Things season.
Fortnite has a history with underground bunkers, so if there’s a huge government facility hiding under Mega Mall with an interdimensional rift ready to unleash the horrors of the Upside Down upon the Fortnite island, then we’ll be here to welcome the hordes of monsters with welcome arms. It would be easy for Epic Games to reskin the zombie-like Fortnitemares monsters as Demogorgons and have that be the event, but we could be in store for something much more epic.
Stranger Things Season 3 will be released on Netflix July 4, 2019.
