Game of Thrones pretty much did exactly what we expected in Season 8, Episode 5, but the series finale still has a chance to surprise us with at least one shocking twist. Will Arya make one more major kill? Here’s how it could happen.
Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.
After burning King’s Landing to the ground in Season 8, Episode 5 of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen official achieved Mad Queen status. Despite hearing the bells ring in surrender, Dany chose to lay waste to the city, and it wasn’t long before the capital looked like Pompeii in the aftermath of Mount Vesuvius. There’s little doubt left that Daenerys will die before the show’s end, and a brazen new theory suggests Arya Stark will use Grey Worm’s face to kill her in the series finale.
Redditor u/hoowuurd posits that Jon and Arya will plot to kill both Daenerys and Grey Worm. After witnessing the Mother of Dragons’ unchecked power and Grey Worm becoming unhinged during battle, Jon finally sees the light. After all, killing innocents after surrender was never part of the plan. Now that the damage is done, Jon will most likely unbend the knee and stand tall in the face of Dany’s actions.
However, killing the Breaker of Chains outright might not be the way to go. This is especially true since the Starks usually aren’t associated with overthrowing and murdering royals (aside from the whole Robert’s Rebellion thing, of course). However, there’s no way the Starks will let Daenerys get away with her destruction of King’s Landing, and Arya surviving the massacre means Khaleesi has a much higher chance of dying.

Here’s how it could happen:
Arya will use Grey Worm’s face to kill Dany, and set it up to look as if either Grey Worm killed Dany and then himself, or just flee the scene and leave it a mystery to the realm.
The theory feels pretty plausible considering Arya has yet to don another face to kill this season. After Episode 5, Daenerys will probably close herself off from those she distrusts, and so using Grey Worm’s face may be the only way for Arya to get close enough without raising suspicion.
It also gives Arya and Jon an opportunity to take out Grey Worm, who helped trigger the massacre of King’s Landing after he killed a Lannister soldier who had already surrendered. In the ensuing chaos, innocent civilians were murdered by a war-crazed army of Unsullied, Dothraki, and Northerners.
Arya has admitted to not trusting Daenerys, and Sansa will more than likely back her plan to put an end to her reign. This theory would also allow Jon to make a decision he’s against, but one that might be necessary to protect the North and the rest of Westeros from the Dragon Queen.
This plan would limit the Starks’ responsibility if Arya killed Daenerys wearing Grey Worm’s face. It would also serve as the ultimate betrayal for Daenerys — to die believing someone else she trusted had turned against her. Either way, it would be a tragic end for both characters. With the Iron Throne burned to a crisp, the series finale is looking more and more like a reset for Westeros.
The Game of Thrones series finale airs Sunday, May 19 at 9 p.m. Eastern on HBO.
