'It Chapter Two' Trailer Remakes a Creepy Scene from the 1990 Miniseries

The trailer frightens and teaches us more about the tormented town of Derry, Maine.

“I used to live here,” says Jessica Chastain, playing an adult Beverly Marsh, in the opening seconds of the first trailer for It Chapter Two, released on Thursday.

We see her enter the apartment of an elderly woman, who offers her tea and spies on her from a dark kitchen until the inevitable occurs.

In the world of Derry, Maine, where the evil known as It has lived for centuries, nothing is really as it appears.

The trailer, which begins with that scene, has a lot of tension that the first movie, released in 2017, might’ve missed, though the 1990 mini-series and 1986 Stephen King novel certainly were high on the creep factor. For a generation that grew up without It, this new trailer also takes them a little deeper into the history of It’s presence in Derry.

We learn that the elderly woman’s father arrived in the United States with $14 in his pocket and operated an entertainment business. He’s seen in a sepia photo that hands on the woman’s wall — she, as as girl stands next to him — posing in front a wagon that reads: PENNYWISE: DANCING CLOWN. Her father’s smile is devious and familiar.

“I was always Daddy’s little girl,” the woman says. “What about you? Are you still his little girl Beverly? Are you?!””

The scene is a remake of the one in the 1990 mini-series, which lives on Youtube. You can watch it below:

In the new trailer, we see Chastain’s shoulder as she looks at old photos in the apartment. Then we see the elderly woman, derobed, spying on her from a darkened kitchen. Her body moves like a demon; we see it contorting violently in one moment, tip-toeing in another, and at the end of the scene, violently approaching Chastain.

Perfectly normal.

The last 30 seconds of the trailer feature a series of quick shots, cutting back and forth between Chapter 1 and the new film as it establishes this new adult versions of the “Losers Club” we met in the 2017 movie. There’s also plenty of red balloons, of course.

It: Chapter Two stars Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, James McAvoy, James Ransone, Andy Bean, Jay Ryan, and Isaiah Mustafa. Bill Skarsgård returns as the titular clown, who also turns up at the very end of the new trailer.

It’s terrifying, and it’s only going to get worse.

It: Chapter Two opens in theaters on September 6.
