'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Episode 5 Spoilers: Photos Show a Major Betrayal
by Jake KleinmanGame of Thrones Season 8 hasn’t been particularly kind to Daenerys Targaryen, and it looks like Episode 5 won’t be any different. A fresh batch of photos from the upcoming GoT episode seem to confirm our suspicions that one of Dany’s few remaining advisors may betray her in Season 8, Episode 5.
Warning: Possible Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.
First, a quick refresh. In Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 4, Jon Snow’s big secret identity basically became common knowledge after he told his sisters, and then Sansa promptly turned around and spilled the tea to Tyrion. Cut to Tyrion and Varys onboard Dany’s ship casually discussing whether Jon (aka Aegon Targaryen) is better suited to rule than the Mother of Dragons.
In a subsequent scene, Varys seems all but ready to ditch Daenerys and side with Jon (who definitely doesn’t want to be king, anyway). However, Tyrion seems more determined to stick with Dany to the bitter end (probably because it’s his fault she keeps losing). You can probably guess where this is headed, and these new images from Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5 seem to confirm that Varys has jumped ship (both literally and figuratively).

Here’s an image of Varys and Jon in deep conversation. We’re pretty sure that’s the beach at Dragonstone where Daenerys is currently hiding out. So that means as soon as Jon arrives to join Dany, Varys may be there to greet him at the shore and start planning their treason.
Even more telling, however, may be a second image from Episode 5 released by HBO, which shows Dany presumably mourning the death of Missandei.
Ignore Daenerys for a second though and take a closer look at the shadowy figure to her right. We’d recognize that untamed mane of hair anywhere. It’s clearly Tyrion, who’s sticking around to console Dany while Varys is off plotting his next betrayal.
Meanwhile, a third image shows Grey Worm still in Dragonstone. So it seems pretty clear he’s sticking with Dany. That’s not a huge surprise given how upset he was by Missandei’s murder. He may want revenge more than anyone — even Daenerys.
Finally, another image shows Jon and Tyrion (along with Davos) standing outside the walls of King’s Landing with their army. So, at the very least, it seems like Dany and Jon are still working together to defeat Cersei, but that alliance may fall apart just as soon as the battle is over if Varys has his way.
What will happen after the “Last War” is done? Will Varys outmaneuver Daenerys, or will Dany see through his betrayal? Personally, I’m routing for the “Mad Queen” to show everyone she’s smarter than all her male advisors put together.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
