Marvel

Avengers: Endgame breaks with one of Marvel’s longest-standing traditions, the post-credits scene. Ever since Iron Man, every movie has featured some sort of teaser for what would come next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In early movies, the studio used this tactic to hint at the next superhero (Iron Man 2 ends with a glimpse of Thor’s hammer in the New Mexico desert).

Later on, Marvel used the post-credits scenes to move the plot forward in more complicated ways. The first time we saw Thanos was at the end of The Avengers, and Ant-Man features a post-credits reveal that Captain America and Falcon have captured the Winter Soldier. These scenes got audiences excited for the next movie and ensured they’d keep buying tickets.

Of course, Marvel’s also used the post-credits sequence as a gag. Most famously, there’s the shawarma scene at the very end of The Avengers, but Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel also featured jokey after-credits scenes.

So what does it mean that Avengers: Endgame has no post-credits scenes at all? For one thing, it signifies that this really is the end of an era. Spider-Man: Far From Home may be on the horizon, but beyond that, Phase 4 of the MCU is a huge mystery.

For now, Marvel clearly wants to keep it that way, even more than it wants to keep fans interested in whatever comes next.

Of course, Marvel Studios is a huge enterprise and things are bound to leak. Various reports have revealed the studios’ ambitious plans for its so-called Phase 4, which reportedly includes a Black Widow movie; new sequels for Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy; and the introduction of the Eternals and Shang-Chi.

So, despite what the lack of post-credits may suggest, don’t worry, Marvel still has plenty in store after Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters April 26, 2019.
