What Arya's New Dragonglass Weapon Means for 'Game of Thrones' Season 8

In an episode full of rushed reunions, one of the most satisfying in Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 1 was between Arya Stark and Gendry. The two characters haven’t interacted in a very long time, but now that Robert Baratheon’s bastard son is making weapons in Winterfell, he got a chance to catch up with Arya. Here’s what their interaction could mean for Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2 and beyond.

Spoilers ahead for Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 1.

What Weapon Is Gendry Making for Arya?

Let’s cut right to the chase. After an awkward interaction with the Hound, Arya seems happy to see Gendry again. They even flirt a little (more on that later). Then, Arya shows Gendry the design for a weapon she wants. We only see it onscreen for a second, but it looks like some sort of spear.

Here’s a screenshot of the design Arya drew up.

As you can see, it’s a spear that separates into two parts. It looks like it might even be sharp on both ends for maximum deadliness. Arya’s also noted that one pointy end should be made from dragonglass so it can be used to kill White Walkers and Wights.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Game of Thrones weapons master Tommy Dunne discussed what could very well be Arya’s new weapon:

“There is one creation in Season 8 that is absolutely phenomenal. It’ll be a showstopper. That was great to finish. It was great to make, great to design it that it was about to be reverse-engineered and made into two different items.”

It’s worth noting that Gendry was also working on a number of other dragonglass weapons, including a special axe for the Hound and a bunch of special arrow tips. So Dunne could be referring to any of these (or something else entirely).

What Does This Mean for Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2

We’ll probably see the finished spear in Game of Thrones Episode 2, but it likely won’t be put to use until Episode 3, when the big battle against the White Walkers finally happens.

Clips from that battle teased in previous trailers showed Arya fighting with some sort of spear-like weapon. Clearly, that’s what Gendry is now working on.

Of course, it’s possible Gendry could finish the spear by the end of Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2, giving the two characters another chance to interact, which means…

Are Arya and Gendry Destined to Fall in Love?

There’s definitely a bit of a spark between Arya and Gendry, but it might be more than that. Fans have long pointed out that these two characters could fulfill Robert Baratheon’s dream of uniting the Stark and Baratheon families.

Gendry might be a bastard, but he’s still got Baratheon blood. So marrying Arya would unite the houses. There’s also a fairly convincing theory that Gendry is actually the secret son of Robert and Cersei, in which case he’s not a bastard at all.

Regardless of where these characters end up by the end of the final season, you can expect them to interact at least one more time when Gendry finishes Arya’s “showstopper” weapon. And with the big battle set to take up all of Episode 3, it seems like a safe bet this moment will arrive next week during Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
