'Stranger Things' Season 3: David Harbour Already Knows How the Series Ends

by Jake Kleinman

Sherriff Hopper will return to Hawkins, Indiana for Stranger Things Season 3 this summer, but the actor who plays him is already looking ahead to the show’s finale. In a new interview, David Harbour teases the end to Netflix’s hit sci-fi show, promising a satisfying conclusion for long-time fans.

Speaking to Digital Spy, David Harbour hinted at where Stranger Things could be heading beyond Season 3, suggesting that showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer already have a plan for how they want the series to end.

“I know the end of the story,” Harbour said, “and I think it’s beautiful.”

When will we reach the ending? Only Netflix executives know for sure, but the going rumor is that Stranger Things could conclude with Season 5, and Harbour seems to suggest that’s still the plan.

“I don’t think four is enough,” he said. “I think five is maybe enough – if you want my opinion, I would like five.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that number thrown around. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 2017 Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy said the show would likely continue into Season 5, but anything beyond that was “unlikely.”

“Hearts were heard breaking in Netflix headquarters when the brothers made four seasons sound like an official end, and I was suddenly getting phone calls from our actors’ agents,” he said. “The truth is we’re definitely going four seasons and there’s very much the possibility of a fifth. Beyond that, it becomes I think very unlikely.”

That same year, Matt Duffer told E! News something similar.

“Four seems short, five seems long,” he said.

More recently, series star Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) echoed the same idea in an interview with The Telegraaf.

“I know that Matt and Ross , their goal is not to go as many seasons as possible,” he said. “It’s to go until they finish their story, and I’ve heard the magic number is either four or five.”

With Season 3 on the horizon, we’ll soon have a better sense of how big a story the Duffer brothers are planning to tell. But in the meantime, you can rest assured that whenever the series does end, it will be “beautiful.”

**Stranger Things Season 3 hits Netflix on July 4.
