'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Spoilers: Dany's S2 Vision Teased a Dark Ending
by Jake KleinmanThroughout the history of Game of Thrones there have been a handful of visions and prophecies that didn’t really make any sense at the time. But now that the end is upon is, it’s worth re-examining some of those weird Game of Thrones moments to see what they could reveal about Season 8. One vision in particular, which Daenerys Targaryen experiences in Season 2, may include a big spoiler about how the Mother of Dragons’ final showdown with the Night King could play out.
In short: Dany may get what she’s always wanted in the worst way possible.
Warning: Possible spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 ahead.
The scene in question was recently resurfaced by redditor u/marisaann26. It takes place at the end of Season 2, when Dany has to rescue her baby dragons from an evil wizard. During that attempt, she experiences a vision that transports her to the throne room in King’s Landing, except the ceiling is destroyed and it’s snowing. Then she hears the sounds of her dragons crying and walks out of the room, where she’s suddenly transported to the Wall and the snowy wilderness beyond. Finally, she enters a tent where her dead husband Khal Drogo is waiting with their unborn baby. She seems to consider staying with them, but ultimately leaves, returning to her actual location in Essos where the wizard tells her, “You’ll be with your dragons through winter, summer, then winter again.”
There’s a lot to unpack here in light of the last seven seasons of Game of Thrones and everything we know about Season 8, but as u/marisaann26 explains, much of what we saw in that vision has now happened on the actual series.
“Dany was going to go attack King’s Landing and take the throne by force,” they write, “but she was told Jon and company beyond The Wall need rescuing – goes beyond the wall.”
The screams of her baby dragons in that vision also echo the wail of Viserion when he was killed by the Night King, only to be resurrected as an undead ice dragon. And as we saw at the end of Season 7, it’s already begun to snow in King’s Landing.
But what about her baby? We don’t expect to see Khal Drogo make a comeback in Game of Thrones Season 8, but maybe there’s another explanation. Fans have speculated that Daenerys could be pregnant with Jon Snow’s child, so maybe that’s how the showrunners plan to fullfill this part of her Season 2 vision.
This also lines up with a recent interview with Night King actor Vladimir Furdik, where he hinted that we’ll finally learn what the Night King is after in Season 8, suggesting his target could be one specific character.
u/marisaann26 speculates that the Night King’s target could be Dany, but rather than kill her he may turn the Mother of Dragons into the “Night Queen.” This would explain the wizard’s promise that she would be with her “dragons through winter, summer, then winter again,” especially if the Night King manages to kill the remaining two during the Battle of Winterfell.
But here’s another theory: What if the Night King isn’t after Dany but her undead child? As a pure Targaryen, this unborn (and unconfirmed) baby could be the true heir to the Iron Throne. So maybe the Night King’s plan is to wait until Dany gives birth before killing her and turning her baby into the ultimate White Walker.
That’s probably not the outcome you were hoping for, but this is Game of Thrones, there was probably never going to be a happy ending.
Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres April 14 on HBO.
