Tony Stark dreamt that his fianceé, Pepper Potts, was pregnant in Avengers: Infinity War and that dream could become a reality in Avengers: Endgame. Though Pepper was skeptical of the dream, a new theory suggests she’s already pregnant and that could be how Tony “lives on” following his potential death in Endgame.
Redditor u/SalamanderTore6 theorizes that Tony’s dream had merit and Pepper was really pregnant during Infinity War. In the early scene, Tony is adamant about the dream and how it all “felt so real.” Though she denies she is, Pepper is also unconvinced that they’ll even get to the point of having kids if Tony continues being Iron Man, blaming the reactor in his chest that he no longer needs. However, if Pepper is truly pregnant, then this validates the dream and also broadcasts Tony’s possible death in Endgame. The theory argues that their child would help Pepper “cope with Tony’s death. A child is a way that Tony ‘lives on’ for her so to speak.”

Tony dying in Endgame has long been theorized by fans. In fact, one of our very own Inverse String Theories posits that Tony and Captain America will die together. Pepper being pregnant isn’t outside the realm of possibility and a child would carry on Tony’s legacy after he dies. Tony’s death seems inevitable, especially considering that he’s shown sending what sounds like a goodbye message to Pepper in two of the Endgame trailers. Plus, why have Tony mention that particular dream if it wasn’t foreshadowing something?
We know, of course, that Tony will eventually be rescued from space, but it’s not clear when that will happen and how much time has passed. The latest sneak peek trailer teases a reunion between Tony and Pepper, presumably after he returns to Earth, but there are also shots of Tony with a full head of gray hair while speaking with Captain America. This might mean that there are past, present, and future versions of Tony in the movie.
Which Tony is the current one is unclear, but one thing we know for sure is that he’ll come face-to-face once again with Thanos. Since he told Pepper that he continues to wear the reactor to protect her and any future children they might have, Tony dying during the battle to stop Thanos and keep Earth (and by extension Pepper) safe wouldn’t be surprising.

Pepper being pregnant would ensure that Tony lives on in some way and could also explain why her portrayer, Gwyneth Paltrow, is saying goodbye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Endgame. After all, the grief of Tony’s death and the responsibility of raising their child alone could warrant Pepper’s absence from future Marvel movies — even if she takes up the mantle of a superhero in this one.
Gray-haired Tony may prove us all wrong, though. He could end up living a long and happy life with Pepper, but no matter what Endgame brings for the couple, we know Tony will do “whatever it takes” to make the world a safer place for Pepper and their offspring.
