'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Spoilers: Promos Tease a Major Episode 3 Death
by Meredith JacobsGame of Thrones Season 8 is still a big mystery, but there’s one thing we know for sure: A lot of characters are going to die. Now, thanks to the latest promos from HBO, we may already know one fan-favorite who won’t make it through to the end of Game of Thrones Season 8.
While HBO has done a pretty good job of keeping the details of Game of Thrones Season 8 a secret, we already know that Episode 3 will focus on an epic battle as the Night King and his undead army reach Winterfell. We’re also pretty sure that a lot of characters are going to die in that battle, and now we may have one name to add to that list.
Possible spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 below.
Leaks have revealed that the big battle is taking place in Episode 3, which will air Sunday, April 28, and run for an impressive 1 hour and 22 minutes long. In addition to the new, short promos, HBO also previously released a full trailer for the final season, and all three videos offer a look at this battle. After the latest previews, fans are worried about one specific character’s chances during the fight: Sandor Clegane (aka the Hound).
The moment in question shows the Hound making a particularly desperate face in what appears to be the heat of the battle. This comes just after we see Beric Dondarrion race through the battle with his flaming sword in hand, which some have guessed could mean that Beric is trying to save the Hound.
“Legit worried about The Hound in that scene now,” writes redditor u/LuxReflexio. “The only way I will find his death acceptable is if he dies defending/saving a Stark.”
Another redditor, u/LoveGemini, suggests “Beric is trying to save him” because “he may be having another freak out moment with all the fire.”
It’s unclear if that’s the case or if it’s just how the promo has been edited together. The Hound has been terrified of fire ever since his brother burned his face as a child, resulting in the scars he now has. Maybe the Hound is steeling himself because he’s around all that fire. Or maybe he’s simply taking a moment to rest as much as one can in the middle of a battle.
If he does die saving a Stark, perhaps he saves Arya, whom we know will be part of the battle, as we see her fighting in the trailer. After all, the two have history, albeit a messy one. (But who doesn’t on Game of Thrones?)
“I feel like I’ve always been a part of this big show but in terms of being part of the episodes that really define us, this is my first taste of it,” Maisie William told Entertainment Weekly about Arya being in the battle.
Game of Thrones isn’t just defined by big battles but also by its deaths. Therefore, wouldn’t it make sense the battle episode in its final season includes a death that people will be talking about long past its initial airing?
Of course, the Hound may survive and someone else may fall. We see plenty of characters readying for or fighting in this battle in the promos. Realistically, fans should prepare for more than one named character to die. While some will obviously survive (such as Jon, Daenerys, Jaime, and Arya), it can’t just be extras who don’t make it out alive.
Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
