'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Spoilers: Vegas Odds Reveal Who Will Die First
One family in particular is on everyone's hit list.
by Justin DoddGame of Thrones has famously killed off somewhere around 195 named characters since its first episode in April 2011. This final season will be no exception. Many fans have their theories of who is going to die (and how, and by whom), but a certain group of die-hard fans want to know one specific death: Season 8’s first, and there may be a significant amount of money on the line.
Beneath the surface of the internet, there’s an entire community of online gamblers sinking real money into their predictions. The results of these Vegas odds boards may tell us more about the likely outcome of the show than any fan theory could. After all, when they’re actual money on the line, you’re less likely to take a big risk.
Some of the topics people are betting on range from “who will take the Iron Throne?” to “who will slay the ice dragon?” One of the more popular lines, however, is the anxiety-inducing “who will be the first casualty of Season 8?”
Before we dive into the results, here’s a quick explanation of how these types of Vegas betting lines work:
Betting lines are based on a spread, and look like a number with either a + or - before it. Positive lines are based on a 100 dollar bet, and they represent how much money you would net gain on that bet. So +200 means that you would make 200 dollars in profit. The higher the number, the more money you make, but the less likely it is to win.
Negative lines represent the frontrunner. A lot of people are betting on this outcome. These odds are based on how much money you would have to bet in order to win 100 dollars. -250 means you would have to make a bet of $250 to make $100. Negative lines means it’s the likely bet, smaller positive lines means there’s a fair chance, and large positive odds means it’s a longshot.
Here are the current odds for who will be the first to perish in Game of Thrones Season 8:
These results actually make a lot of sense. The majority of people are putting money on a Greyjoy to be the first casualty of the season. Euron is in the lead with the most bets, followed closely by Yara and Theon, respectively. The Greyjoys have backstabbed enough people that it’s impressive they’ve survived this long. Someone (if not all of them) is going to die, and it will most likely happen right out of the gate. Cersei is currently in possession of Yara, and has no more use for Euron one he returns with an army of mercenaries, so she can freely kill either of them.
On the other end, our leading protagonists are all fairly safe. Jon, Bran, Tyrion, Daenerys, the characters who we have watched grow the most over seven seasons, are most likely going to survive the first episode. No one is putting money on these favorites. But remember, this is not a chart of who is going to die and who isn’t. Rather, it’s who will die first. No one is saying these characters are going to survive all six episodes, but HBO would just have a hard time justifying killing one of these characters off early in the season.
Season 8 of Game of Thrones begins April 14. After all six episodes have aired, you may find yourself a little bit richer.
