'Avengers: Endgame' Chinese Poster Could Confirm Huge Time Travel Theory
Avengers across multiple time periods protect the city of Shanghai in an epic new poster for Avengers: Endgame, and while it’s definitely not any kind of direct spoiler for the movie, some of the character costumes might be, especially in light of the many theories and set photos that have leaked over the past year.
Marvel released a full Chinese theatrical poster on Thursday, and on Friday, this new banner-style poster was released. It features several Avengers — namely Hawkeye, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and Ant-Man — looking out over Shanghai. These heroes probably won’t go to China in Endgame, making this more of an exciting, non-canonical promotional mock-up. However, the costumes we see for each of these characters are still pretty telling.
Thor, Iron Man, and Ant-Man are all wearing their present-day super suit. Thor has his shorter hair and is holding Stormbreaker, the axe he crafted during Infinity War. Tony Stark is in the Mark L suit he used in the fight against Thanos. And Ant-Man’s wearing the same suit we see him in for the Ant-Man and the Wasp mid-credits scene.
It’s a bit more challenging to identify Steve Rogers’ Captain America costume. He has the iconic patriotic shield made of Vibranium and is cleanshaven, so this definitely isn’t Infinity War Steve Rogers we’re looking at. It’s also not the costume featured in Captain America: Civil War and some Endgame promo art or his Avengers costume worn during the Battle of New York. It looks the most like his Avengers: Age of Ultron outfit.
Is that MCU Phase II Cap we’re looking at? Or just post-Infinity War Steve Rogers wearing a throwback costume?
The really telling outfit change here is Hawkeye’s. This particular costume, which has a lot of purple, is reminiscent of the characters outfit in the comics, but it also resembles the suit worn by Jeremy Renner in Captain America: Civil War. It’s definitely not a new costume for Endgame because in everything we’ve seen of Hawkeye in that movie, he looks more like Ronin, his new vigilante persona that sports a fauxhawk.
It looks like this Chinese Endgame banner offers a clash of outfits old, new, and totally unheard of. The simple explanation for this is just that the poster was created as just an exciting form of promotion for the film, but what if there’s more to it than that?
Most of us have accepted it as fact that Endgame will feature time travel, especially thanks to those set photos placing several of these characters at the Battle of New York from The Avengers — particularly Tony Stark, Scott Lang, Steve Rogers, and the Hulk (not featured here).
Could this banner be a hint that Endgame era Thor, Iron Man, and Ant-Man travel back in time to team up with a version of Captain America and Hawkeye in the past? That might very well be the case, but we won’t know for sure until we actually see Endgame next month.
Avengers: Endgame will be released in theaters April 26, 2019.
