'Game of Thrones' Spoilers: Season 8 Trailer Hides a Big Character's Return
by Jake KleinmanThe first official trailer for Game of Thrones Season 8 mostly focuses on the epic Battle of Winterfell, which is expected to arrive mid-season and feature a huge cast of characters facing off against the Night King and his forces. The trailer’s already confirmed a lot of those characters (Jon! Arya! Jorah! Jaime!), but hidden in one scene might be another fan-favorite who’s returning to fight against the undead army — and that could be terrible news.
Warning: Possible depressing Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.
Watch this brief shot from the brightened version of the Game of Thrones Season 8 trailer. Notice anything interesting?
What’s that white blurry thing flopping around behind Ser Jorah Mormont? Could it be? Is that … Ghost?
Jon Snow’s direwolf was last seen in Winterfell. Ever since Jon left for Dragonstone in Season 7, we haven’t heard much about Ghost, but we assume he’s been chilling in the North waiting for Jon like the good dog he is.
Assuming that is Ghost, we’re excited to see him right in the middle of battle — we can’t wait to see him take a bite right out of the Night King or steal some wight’s bony arm and run away with it — but there’s also reason to be worried about this very good boy fighting in the Battle of Winterfell.
Look, this brings us no pleasure at all, but as some Game of Thrones fans have previously speculated, Season 8 could be setting us up for one of the most heartbreaking twists in the show’s history: Ghost’s death. One redditor even predicted that Ghost would die after reuniting with Jon and joining him in battle. Now, this new trailer seems to confirm the first part of that depressing theory.
We’re still hoping Ghost will come out of the Battle of Winterfell unscathed and go on to live a long and happy life, but if that’s not going to happen, at least we’ll be mentally prepared for the worst. The only thing we know for sure at this point is that a lot of characters are going to die at the Battle of Winterfell. Hopefully, Ghost isn’t one of them.
**Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres April 14 on HBO.
