'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Spoilers: Trailer Teases Jon's Huge Realization
by Meredith JacobsThere are several major plot points Game of Thrones Season 8 needs to hit, and one of the biggest is Jon Snow coming to terms with his true identity as Aegon Targaryen. Thankfully, it looks like the first official trailer for Game of Thrones Season 8 may provide some key information on how Jon learns about his ancestry and how he’s handling that revelation.
Possible spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 below.
In the new Game of Thrones trailer, Daenerys joins Jon Snow in the crypts at Winterfell. Jon is clearly standing in front of a statue, and while it’s easy to assume that it’s Ned Stark’s, it may in fact be Ned’s sister, Lyanna’s, suggesting he’s coming to terms with the news that Lyanna was actually his mother while his father was Rhaegar Targaryen.
This moment also feels like a callback to the previous Game of Thrones Season 8 teaser set in the crypts of Winterfell, which showed Jon, Arya, and Sansa exploring the same location. That video lingered on statues of both Ned and Lyanna while also playing old quotes focused on Jon’s origins. (None of that footage actually happened in Game of Thrones canon, but it’s still an important detail to note.)
Could he be visiting these graves in Season 8 because he learns the truth about who he is? Daenerys may not know that her new boyfriend is actually her nephew — and the true heir to the Iron Throne — at that point. She may just be there to comfort him. Jon could even tell her the truth right there, but if a Night King attack is imminent, he may decide to wait until the threat to their survival is taken care of.
However, Kit Harington’s comments in an interview with TV Insider suggest he won’t be able to keep the truth from Daenerys for too long, assuming she doesn’t find out at the same time he does.
“Jon is someone who plays by the book,” he said. “He cannot lie.”
As for how Daenerys will react, Emilia Clarke told TV Insider that finding out who he is and what that means for her claim to the Iron Throne “would cut deep.” Could that be the reason for the look Daenerys has in this moment from the Game of Thrones Season 8 trailer?
If Jon does know the truth in that moment in the crypt, when and how could he learn it? There’s another image in the new trailer that may offer a hint.
Jon Snow stands in front of the weirwood tree in Winterfell. That’s the same place where Arya reunited with Bran and learned about his abilities as the Three-Eyed Raven in Season 7, Episode 4. It’s also where he told Sansa that he used his powers to see her wedding night.
So it seems like Bran likes to deliver weird news to his siblings while sitting under the weirwood tree. In that case, he’ll probably do the same thing with Jon, which means this scene could take place moments after their conversation.
After all, Bran already figured out who Jon’s parents were thanks to some help from Sam Tarly, and he made it clear in the Season 7 finale that he plans to share that information.
“He needs to know the truth … about himself,” Bran said.
Will Bran tell Jon soon after the latter arrives in Winterfell? Could it be at this tree that Bran tells another member of the family what he can do by revealing a part of their past?
What we do know is that the truth has to come out during Game of Thrones Season 8, and Jon Snow is on his way to the perfect place to learn it.
Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
