'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Trailer Breakdown May Confirm 2 Huge Theories
by Jake KleinmanHBO finally released the first trailer for Game of Thrones Season 8, and it’s a good one. The roughly two-minute teaser is absolutely loaded with details about the upcoming six final episodes, with a big focus on that epic battle between humanity and the undead that’s set to take place about halfway through the season. The new Game of Thrones Season 8 also appears to answer two big questions we had about Jon Snow and Jaime Lannister while also raising at least one intriguing new one. Here’s what you need to know.
Warning: Likely spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 below.
Jon Snow Is Going to Ride a Dragon!
Game of Thrones fans have been speculating for years that Jon Snow would end up riding one of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons. His first interaction with them only fueled that fire, and when we learned that he was actually a Targaryen, it basically sealed the deal. However, this image (above) of Jon and Dany walking towards the two remaining dragons (RIP Viserion) is the closest thing we’ve gotten to a confirmation so far.
It’s unclear exactly when Jon will ride a dragon, but it could happen during that big battle against the Night King. Of course, he’ll likely have to find out his true identity first, which might create some awkwardness between Jon and his aunt/lover Dany, but based on this Game of Thrones Season 8 trailer, they seem to be dealing with the revelation pretty well.
Jaime Lannister Fights for the North!
When we last saw Jaime Lannister, he was leaving King’s Landing and presumably heading North to join up with Jon and Dany. Earlier promotional images seemed to confirm that’s where he wound up, but this Season 8 trailer basically confirms it. We see Jaime in the heat of battle, and while it’s tough to make out exactly what’s happening (the fight with the Night King takes place at night), it’s pretty clear he’s a part of the same skirmish as Arya.
The Golden Company and a Mysterious New Character
Finally, we get our first look at the Golden Company (above), a mercenary army hired by Cersei Lannister to fight for her in Game of Thrones Season 8. We see them riding in one of Euron Greyjoy’s ships, and they look pretty formidable all decked out in armor.
One character, who appears to be their leader, has his back to the camera. It looks a bit like Jaime or maybe Jorah, but we know both of them are fighting alongside Jon. So who could it be? The answer is likely a new character named Harry Strickland (played by Marc Rissmann), who’s joining the Season 8 cast as the Golden Company’s leader.
Anyone feel like betting on how long he’ll survive in Game of Thrones?
Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres April 14 on HBO.
