'Altered Carbon' Season 2 Netflix Release Date, Trailer, Cast, and Spoilers

by Meredith Jacobs

If you’re a fan of action and futuristic science fiction series, then Netflix’s Altered Carbon is a show you … might want to consider. Based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel, the series takes place more than 300 years in the future, when new technology means death isn’t permanent and the human consciousness can just be transferred to a new “sleeve.”

The first season introduced fans to this world through Takeshi Kovacs, hired by Laurens Bancroft to solve his own murder. Read on for everything we know about Altered Carbon Season 2, including its plot, cast, and possible release date on Netflix

Spoilers for Altered Carbon Season 1 below.

What Happened at the End of Altered Carbon Season 1?

At the beginning of the season, Kovacs was brought back in a new body to solve the murder of Laurens Bancroft. He did his job, and it turned out that Bancroft did kill himself, as suspected, but his suicide came after several moves made by Kovacs’ sister, Reileen, and Bancroft’s wife, Miriam.

When Miriam found out Bancroft’s affair with a sex worker, Lizzie, resulted in a pregnancy, she killed the woman and the baby. She then drugged Bancroft, who killed another sex worker and then, because of what he did, himself.

This was all so Reileen could put a stop to a group speaking out against re-sleeving, the 653.

At the end of the season, Reileen is dead, but not before she tells her brother that his ex-girlfriend’s consciousness is out there. Kovacs gives up his sleeve and sets out to find Quellcrist Falconer.

Will There Be an Altered Carbon Season 2?

Yes. Netflix renewed the series in July 2018.

When Is the Altered Carbon Season 2 Release Date?

That has yet to be announced. Netflix did release a video announcing Season 2 is “now in production” on February 22. It’s possible that it could be released in early 2020, but we’ll keep you updated once we know more.

When Will the Altered Carbon Season 2 Trailer Be Released?

Since Season 2 just went into production at the end of February, there probably won’t be an official trailer for a while. Netflix is likely to release a couple of teasers before that preview, so fans can look forward to those, with one likely announcing the release date.

Season 1 dropped on February 2, 2018. Netflix released a teaser with that date on December 4, 2017. Five days later, on December 9, the streaming service posted a teaser.

Once we know more about Season 2’s production, we may have a better idea of when to expect videos previewing the new season.

How Many Episodes Are in Altered Carbon Season 2?

There will be eight episodes in Season 2.

Who Is in the Altered Carbon Season 2 Cast?

Netflix released a teaser announcing the cast for Season 2. Anthony Mackie will now be playing Takeshi Kovacs. Simone Missick is playing Trepp. Dina Shihabi is playing Dig 301. Torben Liebrecht is Colonel Ivan Carrera. James Saito is Tanaseda Hideki. Renee Elise Goldsberry is returning as Quellcrist Falconer. Chris Conner is returning as Poe.

The recasting of Kovacs isn’t a surprise, given that the series is about putting a person’s consciousness into a new “sleeve.” “The journey of Takeshi Kovacs spans hundreds of years, many different bodies, and planets. This allows the story to explore themes of identity, mortality, and the human soul,” Netflix said in a statement about the casting to Entertainment Weekly. “In this new season, Anthony Mackie will be the new embodiment of Kovacs, as the series continues to expand on these deeper themes and ideas across longer periods of times and different worlds throughout the universe.”

Netflix has released character descriptions for those new and returning.

  • Takeshi Kovacs: A former Protectorate CTAC soldier who became a revolutionary Envoy, and then a mercenary for hire, Kovacs swears allegiance to no man or woman except one: Quellcrist Falconer. His undying quest to reconnect with her spans multiple centuries, planets and sleeves.
  • Quellcrist Falconer: A fierce revolutionary leader with a deep bond to Takeshi Kovacs, Quell is driven by her desire to reset the balance between life and death.
  • Poe: A centuries-old, highly-evolved A.I. and loyal companion to Takeshi Kovacs, Poe strives to understand what it means to be human.
  • Trepp: An expert bounty hunter, Trepp is known for her ability to track down anyone in the Settled Worlds, for the right price.
  • Dig 301: An out-of-work A.I. programmed to assist human archeologists, Dig finds a new purpose when she meets Poe.
  • Colonel Ivan Carrera: The dogged leader of a Protectorate Special Forces unit known as the “Wedge,” Colonel Carrera is on the hunt for Takeshi Kovacs.
  • Tanaseda Hideki: A centuries-old Yakuza boss, Tanaseda controls organized crime on the planet of Harlan’s World and shares a history with Takeshi Kovacs.

What Is the Altered Carbon Season 2 Plot?

That has yet to be revealed, though there is a second book that it could follow. However, the series creator may have ruled out following it for Season 2. “The second book is a little expensive,” Laeta Kalogridis said to IndieWire. “It’s a giant interstellar war with a huge ship full of aliens. He wrote the second book like it was a $300 million, two-hour feature.”

Furthermore, Quell’s role in the series is different from that in the book. “The stuff we created in the first season that conflated some elements from the third book — like bring Quell into the story earlier — that also altered the structure significantly,” Kalogridis told Entertainment Weekly. “So now you have this character who wasn’t in the second book and I hope if we’ve done our job people will be very invested in this love story.”

With Quell in the cast for Season 2, we can only hope to see a reunion with Kovacs.
