'Star Wars Episode 9' Trailer Release Date Could Be Pegged to 'Avengers'

Luke Skywalker and Iron Man will probably never meet in an actual movie, but when it comes to corporate synergy anything is possible. Right now, rumors indicate that the long-awaited trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX will run during the theatrical release of Avengers: Endgame.

On Tuesday, the sometimes reliable Star Wars fan site Star Wars News Net reported that the theatrical screenings of Avengers: Endgame will have the trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX. Of course, this will happen after the trailer will have likely premiered at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, the official convention that will run from April 11 through April 15. Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26.

It makes sense that the highly sought-after trailer for Episode IX will screen with the newest Avengers movie. Besides the fact that it makes all sorts of sense for Disney to cross-promote its products — other studios envy the kind of attention both movies are getting — both Marvel and Star Wars have been running the other’s trailers for years.

I specifically remember watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters with my family during the holidays when it came out, and seeing the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, which delighted my father because unlike us crazy monsters, there are people who do not live on the internet and watch trailers the second they go online.

Similar to the promotional cycle for 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Star Wars Celebration in Chicago (April 11-15) will likely be when and where Lucasfilm and Disney release the bird’s eye view of Episode IX. This will likely include the film’s official title as well as a two minute trailer for us to endlessly dissect for clues about the final entry in the Skywalker saga.

Principal photography of Episode IX, helmed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams wrapped last week, which Abrams marked with a rather telling photo that may have confirmed a handful of story details. Abrams signed on in 2017 after the original Episode IX director, Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, The Book of Henry), left the project due to “creative differences.”.

Episode IX is intended to be the last of the “Skywalker saga” and will close out the 42-year history of the series. A new trilogy, one disconnected from the Skywalker characters, will be told by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, and the creative duo behind Game of Thrones are also working on their own Star Wars movies too.

But for now, Star Wars fans are almost entirely focused on Episode IX and the highly anticipated trailer that could arrive this April.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released in theaters on December 20.
