'Avengers: Endgame': Gwyneth Paltrow Teases Pepper Potts-Rescue Spoilers

by Mae Abdulbaki

Avengers: Endgame is shaping up to be our last adventure with much of the original cast, and it turns out Pepper Potts is departing too. But before that happens, Gwyneth Paltrow’s character could finally suit up and become the superhero known as Rescue, at least, that’s what the Marvel star seems to be suggesting in a recent interview.

In an interview with Variety, Paltrow confirmed that Endgame will mark her retirement as Pepper, Tony Stark’s fianceé. She also slipped in what might actually be a huge Endgame spoiler.

Inverse is posing a few theories of its own with Inverse String Theory, ahead of the premiere of Avengers: Endgame

“I mean, I’m a bit old to be in a suit and all that at this point,” she says. Could Paltrow be referring to her rumored Rescue suit? The other option is a business suit, but that doesn’t really make sense in this context.

Iron Man-style armor, on the other hand, is a different story. Not long ago, a leaked selfie revealed Paltrow wearing Rescue armor (though the photo’s source was never confirmed). Her last words to Tony before the transmission died were also “I’m going, too,” (at least according to the official closed captions), implying a trip to space.

Pepper suited up in Iron Man 3, but has stayed out of the action ever since. With Tony stuck in space and Pepper most likely intent on rescuing him, Endgame is the ideal time for her to suit up one last time. While Endgame might be Pepper’s final hurrah, Paltrow isn’t against appearing in another MCU film, but only as a cameo or in a brief flashback.

“I feel honored to be a part of something that people are so passionate about,” she told Variety. “Of course, if they said, ‘Can you come back for a day?,’ I will always be there if they need me.”

If Avengers: Endgame marks is the last we’ll see of Pepper Potts, it certainly seems possible that after completing her transformation into Rescue the character could die. That would also line up with her statement that she’s still up for appearing in a brief flashback.

Then again, it could also mean that Tony Stark will die in the upcoming movie. After all, with Tony out of the picture, we probably won’t see much of Pepper in future movies, even if she is still alive. In that situation, a brief cameo of the Stark Industries CEO is probably the best fans can hope for in future Marvel movies.

At this point we can’t so much for sure. It’s just as likely that both characters will die, both will live, or they’ll end up stuck in some alternate dimension together. But at the very least, it seems clear that Avengers: Endgame will provide some much-needed closure on the original MCU romance.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters April 26, 2019.
