'Jessica Jones' Season 3 Release Date: Netflix Kills Remaining Marvel Shows

by Meredith Jacobs

Sometimes, there are announcements that everyone saw coming. The news about the future of Netflix’s two remaining Marvel shows can be filed in that category. The streaming service has officially canceled The Punisher and Jessica Jones, Deadline reports.

The other Marvel shows on Netflix, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil, had all previously been canceled, so the end for these two seemed inevitable, especially with the Disney+ streaming platform.

However, there are a couple lights at the end of the tunnel for fans of the Defenders universe that encapsulated these series. First of all, you can still rewatch the seasons that have already been made, and The Punisher Season 2 did just come out.

“Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come,” Netflix said in a statement to Deadline.

Bernthal also addressed the sad news of the cancelation of The Punisher with an Instagram post saying goodbye to Frank.

“To all who have served. All who know loss. All who love and understand Frank and his pain. It has been an honor to walk in his boots,” he wrote in the caption. “I’m endlessly grateful to the comic fans and the men and women of the Armed Services and law enforcement community who Frank means so much to. Thank you to the USMC and all the wonderful soldiers who trained me.”

Jessica Jones' story is only almost over.

Also, while Jessica Jones has been canceled, Season 3 has yet to be released, so fans do still have more of the Krysten Ritter-led series to look forward to watching. Furthermore, according to Deadline, the Season 3 finale “will serve as a savory series finale,” so it doesn’t sound like fans will have to deal with an unanswered cliffhanger.

“We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others,” Netflix added in its statement regarding the future of Jessica Jones.

At least fans saw these two cancelations coming. However, that doesn’t make them any easier to stomach.

The Punisher Seasons 1 and 2 and Jessica Jones Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix. The Jessica Jones Season 3 release date will be announced at a later date.
