'The Walking Dead' Season 9 Spoilers: Star Teases "Horrific" X Scars Reveal
by Meredith JacobsOne of the major mysteries in The Walking Dead Season 9 right now involves the X scars on Michonne and Daryl’s backs. All we know for certain is that they have them. Anything else is pure speculation, based on conversations and actions. However, Walking Dead star Norman Reedus may have revealed some key details about where those X scars came from and who’s involved.
Spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 9 below.
The Walking Dead revealed that Michonne and Daryl have these X scars on their backs in episodes following the six-year time jump after Rick’s “death.” Fans have expected to see that others have the same marks, but that won’t be the case.
Reedus appeared on Talking Dead following the midseason premiere and addressed those scars.
“It is a backstory, but you’ll find out that what happened with that is something that just happened between Michonne and Daryl,” he shared. “The rest of the group don’t really know what that is yet.”
Now we know that it’s not just a mystery to viewers, but to characters not named Michonne or Daryl as well.
“Something horrific happened right there, and you’ll learn later with the new people coming into the group that there’s certain lines that you don’t cross but we crossed them,” Reedus said. “Just between she and I, that’s our little secret, but it’s a really dark, dark secret.”
After Rick’s departure, Michonne seemingly kept Alexandria isolated, from outsiders and even from the other communities and her friends. She didn’t know Maggie had left. She’s not planning to participate in the fair that will bring the communities together. She was against Judith bringing Magna and her group in, and it sounded like Alexandria had had a problem with bringing in newcomers in the past.
However, she did recently spend some time at Hilltop, after Rosita and Eugene went missing. She, Daryl, Aaron, Jesus (RIP), Magna, and Yumiko were the first to encounter the Whisperers, humans who wear walker skins as disguises.
On their way back to Hilltop with Jesus’ body, they encountered more of them and captured one Whisperer, a teenager named Lydia. Lydia claimed she was the only one left, but Michonne and Daryl weren’t convinced and were worried about her group knowing Hilltop’s location.
They were right to be. Luke and Alden walked right into a trap left by Alpha, the leader of the Whisperers, at the end of the midseason premiere.
What if Michonne and Daryl’s concern and discussion about taking care of Lydia, implying they’d kill her, comes from their “really dark, dark, secret”?
There could have been a group that found Alexandria in those six years, and maybe Michonne and Daryl had to take care of them. The X scars could just be part of what the members of that group did to them.
However, some pieces don’t quite fit. What happened to Michonne and Daryl at the hands of another group could be “horrific,” but would them killing a threat to the communities really be a “dark secret”? They’ve had to kill humans before. There would have to be more to the story to explain why they’ve kept what happened a secret from the others.
Michonne and Daryl could have had to make a tough decision to protect the others, perhaps taking out an entire group even though they weren’t all bad because they didn’t want to risk anyone knowing Alexandria’s location.
What we do know is that answers are coming. Let’s just hope that they don’t divide the communities at a time they need to be banded together to fight The Whisperers.
The Walking Dead Season 9 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
