'Rick and Morty' Season 4 Release Date May Mean "Interdimensional Cable 3"

Despite a dearth of any firm news about Rick and Morty Season 4, a recent tease from the show’s co-creator and vocal star Justin Roiland seems to indicate that a popular episode format is returning for the new season — and that production could be further along than we previously thought.

A third Interdimensional Cable episode is coming … “(maybe).”

On February 9, Roiland shared an image on Instagram from inside a recording studio. In addition to serving as showrunner for Rick and Morty alongside Dan Harmon, Roiland also voices both of the titular characters. He spends more time recording lines for the show than anyone else on the show, but it’s the caption on the post that’s interesting.

“Idc3 (maybe) @rickandmorty,” Roiland wrote.

Clearly, he’s doing some kind of recording for Rick and Morty. The “Idc3” is a clear reference to Interdimensional Cable, an anthological episode format utilized in Rick and Morty’s first and second seasons. (Season 3 replaced it with “Morty’s Mind Blowers”.)

This teaser could also be an indication that voice work on the show is getting close to the season’s end. Here’s why.

Interdimensional Cable began as a concept in the Rick and Morty Season 1 episode “Rixty Minutes” when Rick attaches a device to the cable box in the family room that allows them to surf channels across the infinite multiverse. Some of the most twisted, albeit hilarious scenes from the entire series happen in these short, improvised snippets.

There’s a dimension where ice cream is served out of buttholes. There’s also a commercial for a Lucky Charms/Trix knockoff called Strawberry Smiggles where the kids brutally murder the rabbit-leprechaun in gruesome fashion.

But “Rixty Minutes” and its Season 2 sequel, “Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate,” are each Episode 8 of their respective seasons. Even “Morty’s Mind Blowers,” the similar but different type of anthological episode, is Episode 8 of Season 3.

Does that mean Justin Roiland is currently recording lines for Season 4, Episode 8?

This being an animated series with many stages in the production process, it’s always been a bit unclear how far along later episodes in the season are when the series begins airing. Unlike some live-action shows — like those in The CW’s Arrowverse — that film episodes two months before they air, it seems like entire Rick and Morty seasons have to be completed before the season begins airing. The process seemingly includes plenty of revisions to the script after the animation and vocal work are first recorded.

But if Justin Roiland is actively recording what we can probably assume is Episode 8, then he’s getting quite close to the end. If ever there was ever a good piece of news about Season 4, this is it.

Rick and Morty Season 4 should air sometime in late 2019.
