Will Smith Is Back for 'Bad Boys 3'
The franchise will return after 14 years in 2017
Save the date(s). Sony chairman Tom Rothman has announced that Bad Boys 3 will come out on February 17, 2017, with Bad Boys 4 scheduled for July 3, 2019. The big news accompanying the reboot announcement: Will Smith will be involved (although it’s not clear whether he’s acting, producing, or both).
Smith’s participation is promising, given some of the previous disappointments surrounding Bad Boys. Way back in December 2013, when a third movie was first under serious consideration, Deadline reported that Sony was trying to get the original cast for a true sequel (good!). The report also slated David Guggenheim (who wrote Safe House) as the lead writer. After that promising start, however, there was a long period of silence before the June Deadline report that original director Michael Bay would not return. Instead, Joe Carnahan, who has directed episodes of The Blacklist, would take the reins.
There are not yet any clues about the sequels’ respective plots, but if Smith is involved, even without Bay, action will ensue. He looks as young as ever and he’ll be coming off Suicide Squad. We can’t really say the same for Martin Lawrence, so maybe he can be replaced with a younger, badder boy:
