'Sex Education' Season 2: Release Date, Trailer, Premiere, Actors, Spoilers
What's next for Otis and his sex therapist mother?
by Meredith JacobsIf you’ve already binged Sex Education on Netflix, you’re likely eager to see more. The eight episodes of the raunchy comedy, along with the entertaining cast of characters, quickly hooked fans, leaving them with only one question: When is the Sex Education Season 2 release date?
Fortunately, Netflix hasn’t left fans wondering if there will be more, but we still have plenty of questions. Read on for everything we know, including a possible release date, plot, characters, and more for Sex Education Season 2.
What Happens at the End of Sex Education Season 1?
Otis is a reluctant sex expert due to his home environment. (His mother is a sex therapist.) As a result, he spends the first season working with Maeve in an underground sex therapy clinic they open to help their classmates at Moordale High School.
The end of Season 1 doesn’t see any resolution for Otis and Maeve in a romantic way. Instead, Maeve shows up in time to see Otis kiss another girl, Ola.
Will There Be a Sex Education Season 2?
Yes. Netflix renewed the series less than a month after the first season dropped.
“The reception to season one has been so exciting,” creator Laurie Nunn said in a statement. “Seeing how people across the world have connected to characters that began as ideas in my head is incredible. I’m hugely grateful to every person that has taken the time to watch the series, and I can’t wait to continue this amazing journey.”
“Laurie Nunn has captured the awkward teenage experience with a lot of heart and humor in Sex Education,” Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content, Netflix, added. “Along with the Eleven team and executive producer and director Ben Taylor, she’s created a universally relatable series that has resonated with our members around the world.”
When Is the Sex Education Season 2 Release Date?
That is unknown so far. However, we can speculate due to news of the start of production. According to Backstage.com, casting has begun and “shooting begins in March.”
It’s possible that Netflix will aim to release Season 2 around the same time as Season 1, which would mean a January 2020 release date. It’s unlikely that we’ll see new episodes sooner than that.
When Will a Sex Education Season 2 Trailer Be Released?
We don’t know, but we can assume based on Netflix’s history of trailers and its series that we won’t see an official trailer for Sex Education Season 2 for some time.
The streaming service released the official trailer only a couple weeks before Season 1 dropped. We’ll likely have to wait until within a month of the Season 2 release date for the new trailer.
However, we will also likely get a teaser or two before then, perhaps for the release date announcement.
Fans can also likely look forward to set videos and announcements of the start of production once filming begins in March.
How Many Episodes Will There Be in Sex Education Season 2?
Like with Season 1, Season 2 will consist of eight episodes.
What Will the Sex Education Season 2 Plot Be?
We don’t know yet, but presumably, we will see what happens next for Otis after he kissed Ola and Maeve saw.
“I guess with a classic will-they-won’t-they they can never really get together,” Nunn told Thrillist of Otis and Maeve. “That might happen. … To keep it fresh you have to keep introducing new obstacles.”
Emma Mackey (Maeve) thinks that if her character does get together with Otis, it shouldn’t happen right away. “I think they both need to figure some stuff out,” she said to Cosmopolitan UK. “I think Maeve needs to focus on her friendship with Aimee and on her relationship with herself and self-care and looking after herself. And Otis needs to learn as well, he’s not ready for a relationship. … I think he and Ola are a good fit for now, so we’ll see.”
Getting a Season 2 means having the ability to explore the characters beyond Otis. “Series one is very much Otis’ journey and I think he will again, if we’re lucky enough to get a series two we will always come back to Otis,” Nunn said before the renewal, acknowledging their ensemble cast is noteworthy as well. “It just feels like they could go anywhere. I love the idea of getting different characters together. If not together in a relationship, just together in the space.”
Who Will Be in the Cast for Sex Education Season 2?
According to Netflix, Gillian Anderson, Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Tanya Reynolds, and Patricia Allison will all return.
Stay tuned as we find out more about what to expect from the next batch of episodes.
