'Kimmy Schmidt': Season 5 Release Date, Netflix Movie, Trailer, and More
Tina Fey may already have a plan.
by Jake KleinmanThe second half of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 4 just hit Netflix, and if you already binged through it you may be feeling some remorse. The show might be over, but is it possible we could get a Season 5 in some form? Here’s everything we know about the show’s future, and why you shouldn’t give up on a Kimmy Schmidt Season 5 release date in one way or another.
Has Kimmy Schmidt been renewed for Season 5?
Nope. Unfortunately, it’s the exact opposite. Season 4 marked the end of the series, but it wasn’t death by unexpected Netflix cancellation. Kimmy Schmidt simply ended because the shows creators and cast decided it was time to move on.
That’s why Season 4 featured such a definitive ending, even jumping forward a few years in the future to reveal where everyone’s lives take them. As an extra bonus, we also got one what-if episode that imagined where Kimmy, Titus, and the rest of the gang would have wound up if they never met in New York. So yes, the show is over, but Kimmy Schmidt may live on.
So wait, is Kimmy Schmidt Season 5 happening?
No, but we might get a Kimmy Schmidt movie! Deadline previously reported that Netflix might produce an original film to close out the story, similar how Sense8 got a final movie-length ending after the series was cancelled.
In a more recent article, Kimmy Schmidt co-creator Robert Carlock also told Deadline that a movie would be “fun”
“I just think it would be really fun. We chose very specific ending places for everybody but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t stories to tell. I think there’s some really fun stuff that is still on the table for all of them, so it would be fun.”
“We definitely feel like these characters are fertile enough to revisit,” Tina Fey added, “and yeah, hopefully it will all work out.”
Getting the actors to return might be more difficult, but anything is possible with enough money, right?
Is there a Kimmy Schmidt Season 5 trailer.
No, and even if we do get a movie there’s no telling when the first trailer will arrive. First Netflix has to buy the film. Then they have to write and film it. After that, we could get a trailer. So basically, expect a long wait.
Kimmy Schmidt Seasons 1-4 are streaming now on Netflix.
