'Avengers 4: Endgame' Spoilers: 4 Reasons Valkyrie's Definitely in the Film
by Mae AbdulbakiAvengers: Infinity War might have been the most ambitious crossover event in history, but one popular character was missing in action. Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) was noticeably absent, leaving fans to wonder why she missed out on all the action and whether she’d return to face Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Thankfully, a trail of clues have all but confirmed that Valkyrie will return in the upcoming Marvel movie.
Here’s everything we know about Valkyrie’s role in Avengers: Endgame and what it all means for the movie.
Valkyrie didn’t get dusted in Avengers: Infinity War
This much we do know, thanks to Endgame co-director Joe Russo. Speaking at a high school event in May 2018, he confirmed that Valkyrie survived Thanos’s attack on the Asgardian ship at the start of Infinity War, noting that some of the Asgardians on board were able to get away in escape pods.
Russo didn’t reveal whether Valkyrie survived the Decimation that wiped out half the universe’s population at the end of Infinity War, but there’s plenty of other proof that suggests the character will live to fight in Endgame.
Tessa Thompson tweets about a mysterious April movie that’s clearly Avengers: Endgame
The latest news comes from Valkyrie herself, or at least the actor who portrays her in the MCU. In a recent tweet, Tessa Thompson committed to increasing the “number of women and POC journalist covering the films I have coming out this year. (One in April and in June)” as a part of the Time’s Up movement. Thompson should be commended on her commitment to effect change in the industry. She’s at the forefront in helping to pave the way for more diversity in Hollywood and the media that covers it.
The last part of her tweet, though, has been construed as unintentional confirmation that she will be appearing in Avengers: Endgame. Thompson states she has movies coming out in April and June. In June, she’ll be starring alongside Thor: Ragnarok costar Chris Hemsworth in Men in Black: International. Now, what’s a bit confusing is that Thompson has a second film coming out in April, titled Little Woods. However, it’s an indie film that’s been making its rounds at festivals for a year now and even if Thompson’s tweet doesn’t name the movie with the April release, she’s more than likely alluding to Endgame. It’s a new movie the press has yet to cover and it’s also one in a genre of films where women and people of color in the media haven’t been allowed as much access.
All the other evidence that Valkyrie is in Avengers: Endgame
There are a couple of details that back up this new evidence, from leaked toys to alleged details from the Endgame set.
It wasn’t too long ago that toy leaks all but confirmed Valkyrie’s appearance in Endgame. The fan-favorite character was one of several whose action figure was revealed, sporting a never-before-seen suit and hairdo. So unless the toy companies simply want to cash in on a popular character that doesn’t appear in the latest movie, it seems pretty clear that Thompson has some sort of role in Avengers 4.
Thompson also shot scenes last summer for the film and, while many had speculated it was for Infinity War, the movies were filmed back-to-back, making it nearly impossible to tell. And since she didn’t appear in Infinity War and we know she didn’t die, an appearance in Endgame seems certain.
This would also give her the opportunity interact with new characters (a Valkyrie and Groot meeting, perhaps?) while assisting in the defeat of Thanos.
Avengers: Endgame hits theaters April 26, 2019.
