'Daredevil' Season 4: Charlie Cox Knows What the Plot Could Have Been
"What I heard was very exciting," the series star tells Inverse.
by Jake KleinmanNetflix caught us all by surprise when it canceled Daredevil in November 2018. Not only was the show’s third season critically acclaimed and a hit for the streaming service, but the team behind Daredevil was already hard at work on Season 4, series star Charlie Cox included.
“They’d had a preliminary conversation with me about what might happen and who might be involved or what the story might be,” Cox tells Inverse. “That was exciting me and what I heard was very exciting. So I had a vague sense of what the show might be. I had some idea.”
Cox, who played Matt Murdock (aka, Daredevil) on the Netflix/Marvel series also stars in the upcoming King of Thieves, out January 25. In an interview, he declined to reveal what Daredevil’s writers had planned for Season 4, though he did offer his own hopes for the show’s future — assuming it ever returns.
“I was looking forward to Wilson Bethel kind of getting to inhabit the character of Bullseye,” Cox says. “Season 3 was kind of an origin story for the character and how Agent Poindexter becomes that character. So I was looking forward to having a season where he really embodies the Bullseye persona and what that dynamic would be between Bullseye and Daredevil.”
Despite his excitement at the prospect of more Daredevil, Cox seems to be taking the cancellation well.
“I know that it’s not personal,” he says, “or it certainly doesn’t feel personal to me. Obviously, I’m very saddened by the cancellation and I was shocked by it because Season 3 had been so well received. I imagined we would continue making the show.”
As for that petition making the rounds online, Cox isn’t too hopeful it will be enough to convince Netflix or Marvel to revive the show any time soon, though he still thinks it’s pretty cool.
“I think it’s awesome there’s a petition,” he says. “It’s lovely that people want their voices to be heard and say they want the show to come back, and maybe that will have an influence … if there is a possibility for it to come back, I think the petition can’t hurt. It’s a reminder of how popular the show was and that’s really really cool. Last I heard we’re near approaching 200,000 signatures, which I think is a lot.”
