'The Punisher' Season 2: It's Frank Versus Jigsaw in Badass New Trailer

by Eric Francisco

Frank Castle is gunning for Jigsaw in the Season 2 trailer of The Punisher. On Thursday, Netflix released a trailer for the gritty Marvel series, a spin-off of the now-canceled Daredevil.

In the trailer, Frank (Jon Bernthal) protects a teenaged girl (played by Giorgia Whigham) from a violent threat, a threat that teams up with Frank’s most personal nemesis, Billy Russo (Ben Barnes). The villain re-emerges with the scars from his brutal battle against Frank in the Season 1 finale.

While previous interpretations of Jigsaw, such as Dominic West’s version in 2008’s Punisher: War Zone, turned Billy Russo/Jigsaw into a horror show, the scars on Barnes’ face… isn’t that bad. The actor even told the press during a set visit that the scars are more psychological than physical.

“The repercussions of the fight at the end of the first season are very much marked on his face,” Barnes said. “They don’t want it to be a horror show. It’s internal. We don’t refer to the character as ‘Jigsaw,’ but he very much has a jigsaw puzzle in his brain. It’s not about his face, it’s about the psychological. Even more so than last season, it’s about what’s in his head.”

Oh, and if you’re wondering about the song in the new trailer, it’s “Would?” by Alice in Chains. Whereas the adrenaline-pumping Season 1 trailer was set to Metallica’s “One,” a song about the agony of a wounded soldier, the new trailer plays the 1992 grunge metal track, written and performed in tribute to late musician Andrew Wood, who died in 1990.

Marvel’s The Punisher Season 2 begins streaming on Netflix on January 18.
