HBO 'Watchmen' New Footage Reveals a Gritty Update for Rorschach

by Jake Kleinman

Did you think it was impossible for Watchmen to get even more gritty? As an early new look at the HBO sequel/adaptation coming this year reveals, you were wrong, at least when it comes to the design of Rorschach.

The dark and twisted DC Comic graphic novel from Alan Moore turned blockbuster Zach Snyder movie is coming to HBO this year with a mysterious new series. Previous teasers haven’t revealed much, mostly just showing what appear to be police officers in yellow face masks, but a sizzle reel released by HBO during the 2019 Golden Globes finally gave us a more detailed look at the upcoming show (watch it at the top of this page).

Alongside new footage from Game of Thrones Season 8, Big Little Lies Season 2, and the final season of Veep, we got a fresh look at Watchmen. The most exciting reveal is probably this gritty new take on the detective character Rorschach (where’s his hat?):

We also see a few other unnamed characters in face masks:

We still know very little about the HBO series, though based on earlier leaks it’s expected to take place after the original comic book story in the aftermath of the giant squid attack engineered to bring humanity together. Beyond that, we’re still in the dark.

Here’s an official synopsis from HBO:

Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.

Watchmen premieres on HBO in 2019.
