Will Tyrion's Past Murder Lead to His Death in 'Game of Thrones' Season 8?
by Meredith JacobsThe Game of Thrones Season 8 release date is fast approaching, but we still don’t know much about the final episodes of the HBO series. Will your favorite character survive the big battle against the Army of the Dead and other threats to come? Or will they die before the finale is over? No one is safe, after all, not even a fan favorite like Tyrion Lannister.
Here are three ways Tyrion could meet his untimely end in Game of Thrones Season 8.
Could a past act of Tyrion’s and other characters’ fates suggest what could be coming for him in the final six episodes?
Potential spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 below.
“I think he was given a very good conclusion,” Peter Dinklage told Vulture about his character in October. “No matter what that is — death can be a great way out.”
But can we read into that quote as a hint to what could be coming or perhaps is it just Dinklage’s opinion that dying could “be a great way out” for his character?
Here are four ways Game of Thrones might end for Tyrion Lannister.
Tyrion Will Die
Redditor u/harleyjadeass proposes that Tyrion’s death is inevitable because of his past misdeed. “Kin-killers do not fare well in Westeros,” they write, citing Ramsay and Stannis as examples. “Euron killed Balon and will surely die in Season 8. And Tyrion killed Tywin. Despite the villainous nature of Tywin, I still think the rule applies.”
This theory doesn’t suggest who kills Tyrion, but there isn’t a shortage of possibilities or ways. He could die in the battle against the Army of the Dead. He could survive it, only to be killed later.
If this theory is true, Jaime and Cersei should also be on the list of characters who will die in Season 8.
But the theory doesn’t have to hold water for Tyrion to die in the final season.
The Tyrion Targaryen Theory Will Come True
This one is probably the least likely, especially since, as redditor u/harleyjadeass puts it, “How many secret Targaryens does this show need?”
According to the popular theory, Tyrion is a Targaryen and therefore only Jaime and Cersei’s half-brother. According to redditor u/Moose2_the_O, there’s more possible evidence in the books, but on the show, “Tyrion says he’s always had an interest in Dragons. And Tywin claims ‘you’re no son of mine’ as his last words.”
If this theory ends up being true, then Tyrion wouldn’t be a kin-killer. Therefore, if the above theory about kin-killers is true, Tyrion would have nothing to worry about.
Tyrion Will Take the Iron Throne
HBO’s marketing campaign for the final season is “For the Throne.” The main characters of the series have each done something in the quest to be the one sitting on the Iron Throne when it’s all over. Tyrion could be the one with that honor, whether he’s a Targaryen or not.
If he is, redditor u/bigdaddyBach has a theory. “Kin slaying never works out, [nor] does incest,” they write. “That is why Tyrion, Jon, and Daenerys will be the three headed dragon (all Targaryen) and then Jon and Dany will end up being killed or killing each other leaving Tyrion on the throne.”
Tyrion Will Lose His Tongue
“I believe he will lose his tongue since many people want to cut it,” redditor u/Papa_Gator23 suggests. “In the three siblings, Jaime lost his hand, Cersei lost her pride and dignity. … [Tyrion is] good at talking.” If someone cuts out Tyrion’s tongue, he’d also lose a part of himself for which he’s known like his siblings.
Game of Thrones Season 8 will premiere in April 2019 on HBO.
