'Hellboy' Trailer Earns Its R Rating With a Demonic Bloodbath

by Jake Kleinman

Three months after it premiered exclusively at New York Comic Con, the first trailer for Hellboy is finally here. You can watch it at the top of this page right now. What are you waiting for? Watch it now! Then read on for a bit more analysis.

Ok, done watching? It’s awesome, right?! David Harbour’s Hellboy freaking rocks, and the studio’s decision to go for an R rating clearly paid off in this trailer, which features our hero shooting one enemy point blank in the head and a demon getting chopped in half as blood spews out of it. We can only imagine that the actual movie will be even bloodier (and more awesome).

The trailer also introduces us to a full cast of characters, including Hellboy’s adopted father Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane), Alice Monaghan (Sasha Lane), Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae Kim), and the villainous Nimue the Blood Queen (played by Milla Jovovich). We also get a quick look at Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense headquarters, suggesting that even more members of this supernatural hero team could show up in the actual movie.

As for Hellboy himself, we’re not only introduced to the hero but to two of his key weapons. There’s The Good Samaritan, a massive revolver featured in the comics. Of course, we also see The Right Hand of Doom, a mythical stone appendage given to Hellboy by his actual father, the demon Azzael.

The trailer is packed full of monsters too, and while the 2019 film is expected to rely heavily on practical effects (meaning costumes and makeup), there’s clearly some CGI at work as well. Not that we’re complaining, everything looks great.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, that song is Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony.”

Hellboy hits theaters on April 12, 2019.
