'Smash Ultimate' Tier List: Top Players Debate the Rank of Ridley and Simon

Here's what the world's top Smash players have to say.

by Jake Kleinman

We’re still in the early days of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tier lists, but that hasn’t stopped some of the best Smash players around from offering their early rankings of the Ultimate roster. Two people in particular, Wii U champ Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios and Melee master William Peter Hjelte (aka, Leffen), have already chimed in with preliminary tier lists. Unsurprisingly, those rankings have already been updated.

Here’s a rundown of the latest updates (via EventHubs) to ZeRo and Leffen’s Smash Bros Ultimate tier lists, with a eye towards how the game’s newest characters are shaping up.

Smash Ultimate Tier List Update: ZeRo

After an extremely rough early ranking, ZeRo’s returned with a slightly more polished tier list. Up top, you’ll still find Pikachu, Olimar, Chrom, Peach, Daisy, Olimar, Marth, and Lucina. However, he did demote a handful of fighters, including newcomers like Simon and Richter Belmont, Inkling, and Ken, along with Mewtwo, Sheik, Palutena, Wario, and Roy. He also bumped Yoshi up to the top tier.

Meanwhile, on the low end, ZeRo’s added Bowser Jr., King Dedede, and the Mii Fighter to the bottom of his tier list. He also upgraded Ridley, Pac-Man, and Duck Hunt, while confirming that Kirby and Little Mac still stink.

Smash Ultimate Tier List Update: Leffen

Leffen was a bit more generous with his upgraded ranking, bumping Inkling, Chrom, Mewtwo, Pikachu, Pichu, Corrin, Yoshi, Peach and Daisy to the top of his tier list. However, he also botted newcomer King. K Rool down to a lower tier, along with Meta Knight. Finally, Simon and Richter Belmont held onto their status as top tier fighters, along with Falco and Pokémon Trainer.

At the bottom of the list, Leffen added Solid Snake, who joins Isabelle, Villager, Ganondorf, Kirby, Pac-Man, Zelda, Little Mac, Link, Samus, Dark Samus, and Ice Climbers. He also upgraded Ridley, Palutena, Rosalina and Luma, Duck Hunt, Game & Watch, and Bowser out of the lowest tier.

So what does it all mean?

Like we’ve said before, these tier lists are still basically just rough drafts. They’re bound to keep changing, so don’t take them too seriously. That said, they may still reveal a few interesting details.

For example, Chrom is still a strong contender for best new character, while the debate over other additions like King K. Rool, Simon, and Richter continues to rage. Meanwhile, Ridley remains a source of contention as well (is he good or just unknown?), but based on the latest updates he seems to be trending upwards. At least, for now.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
