'Sabrina' Season 2 Spoilers: Netflix Special Will "Set Up" Future Episodes

by Meredith Jacobs

If, for some reason, you’re the type of person who skips special episodes or doesn’t like holiday episodes (hey, we won’t judge), you’re still going to want to tune in to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale on Friday, December 14. It may not be an official part of Season 1, but it could have a huge impact on the plot of Season 2.

Spoilers for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Seasons 1 and 2 below.

In case you binged through Season 1 when it first released and forgot everything, here’s a quick refresher. Sabrina refused to sign the Book of the Beast until she had no other choice in order to save Greendale. After doing so, Sabrina ended the season with a new look that seemed to embrace her witch side.

Next up for Sabrina is the holiday special. Netflix hasn’t revealed much about it, but we do have this short synopsis: “As the winter solstice approaches, Sabrina orchestrates an emotional séance with serious consequences, and Susie’s merry plans turn menacing.”

Unlike Netflix’s Neo Yokio Christmas special, which didn’t do anything to further the plot, Sabrina’s one-off episode could have big ramifications in Season 2, according to showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa

A Midwinter’s Tale is “a standalone insofar that everything you need to enjoy the episode is in the episode,” Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly. Additionally, there will be parts of Season 1 that play a role in the special to “set up” Season 2.

“We see a little bit more of the aftermath of Harvey and Sabrina, their breakup at the end of part one,” he continued. “We see how Sabrina’s relating to her mortal friends. We pick up a couple of threads about Sabrina and her mom, who’s trapped in limbo, so there’s definitely tendrils of narrative that we continued.”

However, the episode is designed so that new viewers will be able to figure out what’s going on without needing to see what came before A Midwinter’s Tale.

For those who did watch Season 1, there’s not much of a time jump (only a few weeks) between the finale and the special. That means Sabrina will still be dealing with the immediate aftermath of signing the Book of the Beast.

“The Christmas special is a transitional episode that carries us over that hump,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “The Sabrina in the holiday special is much more like the Sabrina from Season 1 than the Sabrina we’re going to meet in the second [season].”

Fans have already seen how Sabrina changed in the Season 1 finale and in the Season 2 teaser trailer Netflix released.

The Christmas special will also offer an update on how Hilda and Zelda will handle having a baby in the house. “You definitely get a big story about the baby,” Aguirre-Sacasa said.

At the end of Season 1, Lady Blackwood gave birth to twins, and one of them was a girl. Knowing Father Blackwood only wanted male heirs, Zelda faked the girl’s death and took the baby home with her.

We’ll see how all these plotlines play out in Season 2 next year, but in the meantime, Sabrina’s Christmas special should help provide a bridge between Season 1 and the story to come.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale* will be available on Netflix on Friday, December 14. Season 2 will be available on April 5, 2019.
