"Elseworlds" 'Smallville' Easter Egg Connects the Series to the Arrowverse
by Meredith JacobsThis year’s Arrowverse crossover, “Elseworlds,” kicked off with The Flash on Sunday night when Oliver and Barry woke up in each other’s lives. No one besides them seems to realize anything is wrong, so they head to Supergirl’s dimension for help. There, they meet her cousin, Clark Lent/Superman, and Lois Lane, at a very familiar location for Superman fans: the Kent farm. And in case the nostalgia wasn’t powerful enough, they also threw in the old Smallville theme song.
Spoilers for “Elseworlds, Part 1” below.
The Smallville homage began even before the first part of the crossover even aired. In tags on the previous Supergirl, Arrow, and The Flash episodes (and the first scene of “Elseworlds, Part 1”), fans see that Earth-90’s heroes have been killed, and among the fallen is the Green Arrow, in a very familiar suit, the same one Justin Hartley wore as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on Smallville.
As Oliver and Barry leave Earth-1, we see where Kara is on Earth-38. She’s visiting Clark and Lois at the Kent Farm, to the soundtrack of the Smallville theme, Remy Zero’s “Save Me.” (Remy Zero even performed the song in a Smallville Season 1 episode.)
In Lois’ first scene in the Arrowverse, we learn that the “intrepid reporter” went to Argo City with Clark and wants to write about it. Clark’s not so sure it’s a good idea since she’d have explain why she tagged along with Superman in the first place
However, considering that he makes “21 cents on the dollar more than” Lois, I say let her write what she wants. (Also, Perry White, how dare you! Let’s hope a future Supergirl episode fixes that pay discrepancy, even just in a conversation between Kara and someone else.)
Later in the episode, Cisco arrives on Earth-38 to get Oliver and Barry’s help with a threat back in Central City, and Kara invites her cousin to tag along. Before he leaves, Lois calls him “Smallville,” just like she did on the show Smallville and in the comics.
The “Elseworlds” crossover isn’t the first time one of the Arrowverse shows has referenced Smallville. In the Supergirl Season 3 episode “Midvale,” Kara said Clark had a friend, Chloe, who “really loves weird tech stuff” and has a “Wall of Weird.”
On Smallville, Chloe Sullivan was Clark’s best friend, who knew his secret, was really good with computers and had a Wall of Weird chronicling the strange occurrences in Smallville after the meteor shower.
These references seem to suggest that Supergirl and Smallville took place on similar Earths (just like how they are some similarities between Earths 1 and 2 in the Arrowverse). We already know that superhero costumes differ between Earths — just look at The Flash suits and now the Green Arrow ones.
“Elseworlds” continues with Part 2 on Arrow Monday night at 8 p.m. and concludes with Supergirl Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in The Flash’s normal time slot on The CW.
