'Avengers: Endgame' Trailer Breakdown: 9 Key Details You Probably Missed

The long-awaited Avengers 4 trailer finally delivered a title with Avengers: Endgame (confirming a popular fan theory that the directors had previously shot down). While the first trailer mostly deals with the immediate fallout of the Decimation — when Thanos snapped his fingers and eliminated half the universe’s population — there are a number of details that might be easy to miss.

The Russo Bros., who directed Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Endgame, shared the trailer early Friday morning over Twitter. Tony Stark is adrift in space on the verge of death, and things are just as bleak back on Earth.

Thor and Bruce Banner mope around while Black Widow and Captain America — Natasha and Steve — try to make sense of what happened, and develop some sort of plan. Hawkeye and Ant-Man also make their triumphant returns.

The trailer feels mostly like an Infinity War epilogue, but here are 9 details worth noting if you dig a little bit deeper.

9. Tony Is Running Out of Nanites

When the trailer opens, Tony Stark is recording a message to Pepper Potts via his Iron Man helmet, but it appears to be malfunctioning. In his fight against Thanos, Tony expended almost all of his Nanites, with his last action being to seal a sword wound in his abdomen. Even then, he had very little left after taking a beating from Thanos.

At some point after Infinity War, he must’ve fashioned this barely-functioning helmet so he could record messages.

8. Tony Is on the Benatar, the Ship Owned by the Guardians of the Galaxy

As the initial shot of the trailer widens, we can see that Tony is in a spaceship, but the design of the seat looks identical to the ship flown by the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Benatar. (Look at the foot pedals!)

This makes a lot of sense considering the Benatar was probably the only spaceworthy vessel left on Titan after everyone fought Thanos. Remember that Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange crash-landed their donut ship while Thanos just teleported around the universe.

7. Thanos Endured Some Extreme Wounds After the Decimation

We don’t actually see Thanos’ face, but after seeing his armor, we see him walking through a field at his chill home on that alien planet. The focus is on his left arm with the Infinity Gauntlet. True to the end of Infinity War, it looks charred and a bit mangled.

But it also looks like Thanos might be limping.

This might confirm what the Infinity War screenwriters have said about the physical toll the Decimation took on Thanos.

6. After Many Years, Steve Rogers Finally Shaved

This one’s pretty obvious but also easy to gloss over because it doesn’t really matter. After being a rogue agent for years and growing out a spectacular beard, Steve Rogers went back to his old clean-shaven ways. This could be an indication that he’s going to suit up as Captain America again and maybe even reclaim his old shield. Maybe.

5. Half of All Living Things Are Dead

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige already confirmed this, but Natasha outright saying it is the first time we learn this for sure in the MCU: “He wiped out 50 percent of all living creatures.”

That means half of all cats, dogs, insects, etc. on every planet in the universe.

4. Shuri Died in the Decimation

In the trailer, Bruce Banner looks at some computer files about high-profile people. Scott Lang, Peter Parker, and Shuri are all listed as “Missing.” Given the absolute chaos of 3 billion or more people turning to ash, they probably list a lot of people as missing. How do you confirm someone’s death when they’re a pile of ash now?

This is perhaps the biggest revelation hidden in this trailer as a lot of people assumed Shuri might have a significant role to play in developing some technology the good guys might use to defeat Thanos and undo the Decimation.

Angela Bassett (who plays Queen Mother Ramonda in Black Panther) said in July that Shuri survived. It looks like she was wrong — or even lied about it.

3. Nebula and Tony Stark Team Up

In August, Nebula actress Karen Gillan teased that she gets a “new BFF” in Avengers: Endgame, and it looks like that might be the obvious answer of Tony Stark.

We don’t see Nebula and Tony together other than the above shot (assuming that’s Tony’s shoulder), but we see them separately in the same ship.

2. Hawkeye Is in Japan and Probably Lost His Entire Family

Hawkeye was entirely MIA for Infinity War, and when we catch up with him in the Endgame trailer, he’s just killed several people in a street in Japan. (It’s definitely Japan based on the signage and decor.) “We lost family,” Cap says in the voiceover at this point. “We lost a part of ourselves.” That’s when Clint takes off his mask and looks at Natasha.

Whether or not it’s true, Marvel Studios wants us to at least assume that Clint’s entire family died. What else would drive the MCU’s cheerful, retired dad to become the murderous Ronin?

1. Scott Lang Escaped the Quantum Realm, and He Brought the Quantum Tunnel With Him

After two minutes of bleak misery, Scott Lang shows up and delivers some blissful comedic relief. Clearly, he somehow escaped the Quantum Realm after getting trapped in the Ant-Man and the Wasp post-credits scene. But he also drove there in the same van we saw throughout that movie. Remember that in the post-credits scene, Team Ant-Man had shrunk the Quantum Tunnel down to fit in the back.

We’d wager that this scene actually happens before the one that precedes it in the trailer, when Steve and Natasha talk about some plan.

Scott Lang is literally driving the big plot fix right to the Avengers’ front door. We know for a fact that time vortexes exist in the Quantum Realm so their “plan” is probably to use that to go back in time and undo what happened.

Of course, it’ll probably be far more complicated than that, and we can’t wait to see how Endgame unfolds.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters sometime in April 2019 after moving up from its original May 3 release date.
