'Captain Marvel' Spoilers: Blue Blood Is a Callback to an Early MCU Movie
by Eric FranciscoCarol Danvers bleeds blue, but it’s not because she’s a New York Giants fan. In the new trailer for Captain Marvel, Air Force pilot Carol Danvers is turned into an alien Kree warrior and consequently bleeds blue instead of red like us normal, meaty humans.
Marvel debuted the new trailer for Captain Marvel on Monday night. Starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, the film introduces one of the most important Marvel superheroes — and the one who may actually be able to defeat Thanos in 2019’s Avengers 4.
Several times in the trailer, however, Carol Danvers bleeds a greenish blue instead of red. And it’s not because of that stupid, inaccurate myth that “Blood is blue without oxygen, actually.” Blood is red. Don’t believe anyone who says otherwise.
Luckily, Marvel isn’t into stupid myths. Rather, it’s into continuity. In the MCU, the alien race known as Kree — seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and a few episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — actually have blue blood.
You can see blue Kree blood in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, when Kree extremist Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) sacrifices some poor Kree schlub and spills his blood, which is part of some kind of ancient ritual.
In the comics, Carol Danvers is within the vicinity of a “Kree bomb” that gives her superpowers, allowing her to become Ms. Marvel (and much later, Captain Marvel). In essence, the Kree bomb turned Carol into a human-Kree hybrid.
But in Margaret Stohl’s The Life of Captain Marvel mini-series, Carol’s origin was slightly rewritten, making Carol half-human, half-Kree to begin with, which allowed her to survive the devastating effects of the Kree bomb.
It’s unknown precisely what shape Carol’s origin will take in Captain Marvel. The trailer does indeed show Carol surviving a catastrophe on an alien planet, turning into a Kree warrior, and joining the Kree military squad Starforce. But is Carol a human turned half-Kree, or is Carol born a hybrid who only gets her powers after coming in contact with Kree particles?
We’ll have to find out when Captain Marvel hits theaters.
Captain Marvel arrives in theaters on March 8, 2019.
