'Star Wars Episode 9' Rumors: Leak Could Undo an Unpopular ‘Last Jedi’ Plot

by Jake Kleinman

Star Wars: Episode 9 is still a year away from release, but the leaks are coming hard and fast. The latest rumor, which first appeared on Reddit and quickly gained some momentum across the web, claims to reveal a ton of details about Episode 9, including one that could undo an unpopular plot point from Star Wars: The Last Jedi: the destruction of Kylo Ren’s helmet.

According to redditor u/Xyzsvtabc, Disney recently shared a ton of information about Episode 9 and other Star Wars media at a marketing presentation. The leak has since been largely confirmed by Star Wars news site Making Star Wars, which is usually reliable when it comes to this kind of leak.

As you probably remember from The Last Jedi, Kylo smashes his helmet to pieces in a fit of rage after Supreme Leader Snoke calls it “ridiculous” and chews him out for losing to Rey in their lightsaber battle at the end of The Force Awakens. It’s a powerful scene but the annoying end result is that from this point on Kylo never wears a helmet. So instead of coming across as scary he just looks like whiny Adam Driver with a big scar.

However, it appears that with Snoke no longer around, Kylo Ren’s helmet may return in Episode 9.

“Kylo has his helmet back and that it has been put back together with some kind of red adhesive,” the redditor writes. “It looked kinda cool with the red lines going through it.”

Making Star Wars backs this up, but adds that Kylo may only sport his reconstructed helmet (which sounds totally badass) for a small portion of the movie.

“Sources have said they saw Kylo Ren with the reforged mask on in various stages of dress, which also means we can’t yet say how often he wears the helmet,” the site says, adding that it gives Kylo a “corrupted” look somewhat reminiscent of Darth Maul.

The same leaker revealed that Episode 9 will take place about a year after the end of The Last Jedi, which lines up with previous leaks. They also said the movie will end build up to a battle between Rey and Kylo (which, duh), that Rey’s broken lightsaber will be “reforged,” and said that we’ll visit a new jungle planet.

Perhaps most interesting, BB-8 will make a new friend after meeting Dio, a smaller droid with “little and has sort of a cone shaped head” who looks up to the spherical droid. It’s hard to imagine a robot cuter than BB-8*, but Disney is clearly seeing dollar signs. (If there’s one thing that company knows, it’s how to sell toys.)

Potential toy sales could also help explain the return of Kylo’s helmet, though it will likely also be seen as a rebuke to Rian Johnson’s vision for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Either way, we’re just excited to see Kylo Ren kick things up a notch in Episode 9 now that he’s leading the First Order.

Star Wars: Episode 9 won’t be released until December 20, 2019.
